The global trailer for “Gondhal,” directed by Santosh Davakhar, has officially been released, generating excitement ahead of the film’s worldwide theatrical debut on November 13, 2026. This psychological thriller marks India’s official submission for the 99th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. Notably, “Gondhal” will be released in seven languages: Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and English.

The film’s multilingual rollout aims to reach diverse markets, including India, the US, the UK, Europe, Australia, Dubai, and Africa. The makers have proudly stated that “Gondhal” is the first Marathi film to achieve a seven-language global theatrical release.

A Glimpse into the Story

Set against the rich cultural backdrop of Maharashtra, “Gondhal” tells the story of newlyweds Suman and Anandrao. Their lives take a disturbing turn as personal desires, marital responsibilities, and devotion intertwine. The trailer provides a sneak peek into the couple’s strained circumstances and the mysterious events that unfold, forming the crux of this psychological thriller.

Santosh Davakhar’s Vision

In discussing the film’s international appeal, writer-director Santosh Davakhar expressed his desire to showcase a lesser-known aspect of Indian culture. He stated, “Global perceptions of Indian cinema are often shaped by narratives of poverty and caste conflict – important realities, but not the complete expression of India. Gondhal is not a film but generations of culture, people, traditions coming together. Getting the world to know about this tradition is something that makes me immensely happy.”

Davakhar also emphasized the importance of international film platforms in sharing regional stories with a broader audience. He remarked, “Global festivals like academy awards help filmmakers to bring forth the ethnicity of our very roots across continents and not only in India. To experience India in its truest form. I created this film to bring one such powerful tradition to the global screen through a culturally authentic and universal cinematic language.”

Oscar Aspirations and Cast Details

“Gondhal” has been selected as India’s official entry for the 99th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. The filmmakers have indicated that the film is also being considered for multiple other categories, although specific details about these submissions have yet to be revealed.

Davakhar previously earned the Silver Peacock for Best Director at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), where the jury described “Gondhal” as “like a Shakespearean fable set in a real world.” The film features a talented cast, including Ishita Deshmukh, Kishor Kadam, Yogesh Sohani, and Nishad Bhoir. Produced by Santosh and Diksha Davakhar under Davakhar Films, the film is noted for its unique opening, which consists of a 25-minute unbroken take.
