Nationwide Crackdown: Operation Trident Targets Drug Cartels

In a decisive move against drug trafficking, the Indian government has launched ‘Operation Trident,’ a coordinated effort involving 38 specialized teams targeting multiple locations in Assam, Mizoram, and Manipur. This operation is part of a broader strategy by the Modi Government to adopt a Zero Tolerance policy towards drugs, shifting focus from merely seizing narcotics to dismantling the financial networks of drug cartels. The simultaneous assault aligns with the Vision Document on Narcotics Control for 2026-2029, emphasizing the need to disrupt transnational syndicates.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the operation via a post on X, noting the extensive measures taken against an international narco-cartel. Shah confirmed that the crackdown on October 23 exposed illicit hawala transactions valued at ₹100 crore, leading to the freezing of 1,424 bank accounts, the attachment of properties worth ₹17.82 crore, the seizure of ₹12 lakh in cash, and the arrest of 18 individuals.

Operation Overview

Operation Trident initiated by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on October 23 reflects an exceptional level of cooperation among various agencies. The NCB worked closely with the Mizoram Police and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to dismantle the infrastructure and financial framework of a significant transnational drug syndicate. With days of careful intelligence gathering and planning, the operation strategically targeted both logistical hubs and financial networks linked to drug trafficking.

Executing the operation required the mobilization of 38 multi-agency teams that operated under a unified command structure, simultaneously striking at pre-identified locations across the northeastern states. The targeted areas included key urban centers and sensitive border regions, such as Aizawl, Champhai, and the Indo-Myanmar border town of Zokhawthar. Despite the challenging geography, the seamless coordination among agencies ensured comprehensive coverage and effective execution of the operation.

Background of the Drug Cartel

This extensive operation results from ongoing intelligence-led investigations by the NCB, Mizoram Police, and ED into a prolific transnational drug cartel. The syndicate, reportedly led by a Myanmar-based kingpin known as Thangcintuang, has been orchestrating the movement of methamphetamine and heroin through routes connecting Myanmar, Mizoram, Manipur, and beyond into India and Bangladesh.

Prior investigations led to significant breakthroughs, including the arrest of key cartel members. Among those captured were Thangcintuang himself, a significant link in the drug distribution chain, and various facilitators and operators involved in the financial transactions that empowered the cartel’s operations.

The detailed investigations and subsequent arrests underline the government’s commitment to tackling the drug menace. The successful execution of Operation Trident signifies a pivotal step in dismantling the networks that contribute to drug trafficking in the region, paving the way for a concentrate effort to eradicate drug-related activities by December 31, 2029.
