Youth Empowerment through Traditional Sports and Community Service

The MY Bharat National Service Scheme (NSS), part of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, recently organized a vibrant event titled ‘Gram Seva evam Parampragat Khel Diwas’ (Village Service and Traditional Sports Day). This initiative was part of the sixth week of the ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat 100 Week Sankalp Abhiyan’, aiming to extend its outreach beyond educational settings and into rural communities.

Facilitated by the Directorate of NSS and supported by 15 Regional Directorates, the event took place across over 160 institutions and their neighboring villages. More than 80,000 participants joined in, including youth, members of Gram Panchayats, village elders, and local residents. The focus for the month’s activities was ‘Fit Youth, Addiction-Free Youth (Shakti evam Seva)’, promoting physical fitness, community spirit, and social responsibility in the fight against substance abuse.

Engaging Activities for All

Traditional sports took center stage during the event, with NSS units organizing local tournaments featuring popular games such as Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Tug of War, and Kushti. These sports attracted over 21,500 participants, fostering teamwork, healthy competition, and positive engagement among the rural youth.

Community Service Initiatives

The Gram Seva activities allowed NSS volunteers to collaborate with Gram Panchayat members in various community service projects. These included cleaning village paths, improving sanitation around public water sources, and planting saplings. Over 19,800 individuals took part in these initiatives, echoing the NSS motto, ‘Not Me, But You’, through their collective actions aimed at rural improvement.

Promoting Awareness and Inclusivity

In addition to sports and community projects, awareness programs and youth-led discussions on healthy living and the goals of the Nasha Mukt campaign engaged more than 18,600 people. Notably, the participation of over 29,500 young women in both sporting and community activities showcased a strong commitment to gender inclusivity.

Wider Reach through Social Media

To further amplify the campaign’s impact, participants created over 4,000 social media posts using the hashtag #NashaMuktYuva. This effort extended the visibility of grassroots activities, reaching a larger audience and promoting the core message of the campaign.

The Week 6 initiative successfully bridged educational institutions with rural communities, highlighting the vital role of collective efforts in nurturing healthy lifestyles and positive youth engagement. The ongoing commitment to fostering a Nasha Mukt Viksit Bharat stands firm as participants collectively contribute to a better future.
