Peter Kindersley: Co-founder of Dorling Kindersley
Peter Kindersley (born 1941) is a British publisher and entrepreneur. He co-founded Dorling Kindersley, one of the world’s largest illustrated non-fiction publishing houses, and later became a significant figure in organic farming and health retail.
Early Life and Education
Kindersley was born in 1941, the son of David Kindersley, a stonecutter and typeface designer, and his first wife Christine. He attended King Edward VI School in Norwich and later studied at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, where he met his future wife Juliet.
Career and Achievements
After completing his education, Kindersley worked for an advertising agency before joining Mitchell Beazley publishers in 1969 as art director. During his five years there, he designed the illustrated manual The Joy of Sex, a notable contribution to the publisher’s catalog. In 1974, he co-founded Dorling Kindersley with Christopher Dorling, establishing what would become a global publishing powerhouse specializing in illustrated reference books for both adults and children.
Kindersley ran Dorling Kindersley alongside Dorling until 2000, when he sold his family stake in the company for £105 million. The firm’s books became known for their visual approach to non-fiction subjects and were translated into numerous languages, reaching audiences worldwide.
Notable Events and Milestones
In 2000, Kindersley’s sale of his stake in Dorling Kindersley marked a major transition in his business interests. That same year signaled his shift toward organic agriculture and retail ventures. In 2005, Kindersley and his family acquired Neal’s Yard Remedies, a UK-based organic health and beauty company, with Peter leading the acquisition.
