Alan Waddell: Sydney’s Dedicated Street Walker
Alan Mossman Waddell (24 July 1914 – 2 September 2008) was an Australian walker who received national and international media attention for walking every street in over 280 suburbs in Sydney. He walked 5,000 kilometres across the city, documenting his journey through every street in 284 suburbs by the time of his death.
Early Life and Education
Waddell was born on 24 July 1914. He completed his schooling at Sydney Boys High School in 1931 and qualified as a chartered accountant. During World War 2, he served in the Citizen Military Forces. On 30 May 1942, he married Marjorie Eileen Hume.
Career and Achievements
Waddell worked as a chartered accountant for much of his life. His most notable achievement came later, after his retirement. Following Marjorie’s death in 2002, he took up walking as a pastime and to address aneurysms in his legs. After walking every street in his local suburb, he began to venture further afield in 2003.
By 2004, his walking project started to attract media interest. Over the next five years, he became a regular feature in print and electronic media outlets. His feat eventually drew coverage from media organisations in China, South Africa, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Waddell’s systematic exploration of Sydney’s streets began in earnest in 2003, when he expanded beyond his local suburb. By 2004, his project had gained traction with local media. Awards and Honors
In 2007, the New South Wales government presented Waddell with the Live Life award for promoting health and well-being. He also served as an ambassador for the Heart Foundation and the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.
