Life and Career
Jessie Alice Tandy was born on June 7, 1909, in Hackney, London, England, the youngest of three children. She trained for the stage from a young age and made her professional acting debut in 1927. Her breakthrough came in 1947, when she originated the role of Blanche DuBois in the Broadway premiere of Tennessee Williams’s “A Streetcar Named Desire,” starring opposite Marlon Brando as Stanley Kowalski, a performance that established her as one of American theater’s leading actresses.
Tandy went on to build one of the most celebrated stage partnerships in American theater history alongside her second husband, actor Hume Cronyn, appearing together in productions including “The Fourposter,” “The Gin Game,” and “Foxfire,” the latter two earning her Tony Awards. Across her career she won a total of four Tony Awards and appeared in more than one hundred stage productions, alongside more than sixty film and television roles.
Her greatest popular success arrived late in her career with the 1989 film “Driving Miss Daisy,” in which she played Daisy Werthan, an elderly Southern widow who forms an enduring friendship with her Black chauffeur, played by Morgan Freeman. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and Tandy’s performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress, making her, at age 80, the oldest actress to receive the honor.
Awards and Legacy
In addition to her Oscar and four Tony Awards, Tandy received a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, and a Primetime Emmy Award over her career, along with the National Medal of Arts and the Kennedy Center Honors. She and Cronyn received the first-ever Tony Award for lifetime achievement in the theater just months before her death. She died of ovarian cancer at her home in Easton, Connecticut, on September 11, 1994, at the age of 85, with Cronyn by her side.
