Life and Career
Enid Diana Elizabeth Rigg was born on July 20, 1938, in Doncaster, England. Her early childhood was spent in Jodhpur, India, where her father worked for the state railway, an experience she later credited with giving her an independent spirit. At age eight she was sent back to England for boarding school, a jarring transition she described as isolating. She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, where she built her reputation as a classical stage performer.
Rigg’s international breakthrough came in the mid-1960s when she was cast as secret agent Emma Peel opposite Patrick Macnee in the British television series “The Avengers.” Her portrayal of a stylish, capable, and independent heroine helped redefine how women were depicted on television and made her a global star. In 1969, she played Tracy di Vicenzo in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,” becoming the only woman to marry James Bond on screen, in George Lazenby’s sole outing as 007. Her stage work continued to flourish alongside her screen career, and she won a Tony Award for her portrayal of the title role in “Medea” in 1994.
Later in life, Rigg introduced herself to a new generation of audiences as Olenna Tyrell, the sharp-tongued “Queen of Thorns,” on HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” a role that brought her four Emmy nominations. She also won a Primetime Emmy for playing Mrs. Danvers in a 1997 television adaptation of “Rebecca.”

Over her career, Rigg received numerous honors, including a BAFTA, an Emmy Award, and multiple Tony nominations, and she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her services to drama. She died on September 10, 2020, at her home in London at the age of 82, after being diagnosed with cancer earlier that year.
