Life and Career
Karl Otto Lagerfeld was born on September 10, 1933, in Hamburg, Germany, to Otto Lagerfeld, a businessman who had built his fortune in the condensed milk trade, and Elisabeth Bahlmann. He grew up in comfortable surroundings and showed an early fascination with drawing, art, and clothing, later completing his education in Paris at the Lycée Montaigne.
Lagerfeld’s professional career began in the 1950s after he won a coat-design competition organized by the International Wool Secretariat, a victory that led to an apprenticeship with the French couturier Pierre Balmain. Over the following years he worked with several major houses, including Jean Patou and Chloé, steadily building a reputation for versatility and inventiveness. In 1965 he took charge of fur and ready-to-wear design at the Italian house Fendi, a relationship that would last for the rest of his life.
The defining chapter of his career opened in 1983, when he became creative director of Chanel. At the time the house had grown quiet following the death of its founder, Coco Chanel, but Lagerfeld’s bold reinterpretation of its tweed suits, quilted bags, and interlocking-C motifs revived it into one of the most commercially dominant names in fashion. He later launched his own eponymous label and, in 2004, partnered with the retailer H&M to bring designer fashion to a mass audience.
Beyond clothing, Lagerfeld was an accomplished photographer who shot many of Chanel’s advertising campaigns and contributed to publications such as Vogue. He also illustrated books, designed opera and ballet costumes, and became known for a highly stylized personal image built around a powdered ponytail, dark sunglasses, and fingerless gloves.
Awards and Legacy
Lagerfeld’s contributions to fashion earned him wide recognition throughout his career, including the Bambi Award for Creativity, and cemented his reputation as one of the industry’s most transformative figures. He died on February 19, 2019, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, at the age of 85.
