Ramayana Set to Make History as First Indian Film to Launch in ScreenX Format Globally
Ramayana, the highly anticipated opening chapter of Nitesh Tiwari’s two-part retelling of the epic, is set to make its global debut this Diwali. This release marks a significant milestone as it will be the first Indian film to be showcased in the innovative ScreenX format, as reported by Variety India. The film promises to deliver a unique cinematic experience, combining cutting-edge technology with a beloved story.
Global Release in Innovative Formats
The agreement with CJ 4DPLEX will see Ramayana screened in nearly 1,300 ScreenX and 4DX auditoriums worldwide. The film boasts an impressive cast, featuring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey as Lakshmana. Produced by Namit Malhotra under Prime Focus Studios, the film also involves DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. The screenplay is penned by Shridhar Raghavan, while the musical score is a collaboration between renowned composers Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman.
A Unique Viewing Experience with ScreenX
ScreenX technology enhances the viewing experience by extending selected scenes onto the side walls of the auditorium, creating a 270-degree field of view. This immersive format draws viewers into the action, allowing them to experience pivotal moments in a more engaging way. For Ramayana, specific action sequences and dramatic beats have been tailored for this side-wall presentation, ensuring that audiences feel a part of the unfolding narrative.
This innovative approach follows the success of Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which became the highest-grossing ScreenX release in India and was the first film specifically shot for this format. Ramayana aims to build on this momentum, offering audiences a fresh way to connect with the epic tale.
Enhancing Sensory Experience with 4DX
In addition to ScreenX, Ramayana will also be available in 4DX, a format that enhances the viewing experience through physical sensations. This technology pairs motion-enabled seating with environmental effects that are synchronized with on-screen action. The 4DX auditoriums can incorporate movement, vibration, wind, water, snow, scent, and lighting cues, adding layers of sensory detail to the storytelling. Notably, Ramayana includes sequences specifically designed for 4DX playback, further enriching the audience’s experience.
As part of a larger theatrical rollout, Ramayana is the first of two live-action adaptations based on the Valmiki-attributed epic. The production is backed by Prime Focus Studios, with DNEG handling visual effects alongside Monster Mind Creations. The second part of the film is currently in production and is scheduled for a worldwide release in Diwali 2027. With the ScreenX and 4DX deal finalized, Ramayana is poised for a grand global release this Diwali 2026, offering audiences two premium formats to enjoy its spectacular visuals and action sequences.
