Northern Sea Route Gains Attention: India Targets First Cargo Shipment to Russia via Arctic Route

India is planning to send its first cargo ship via the Northern Sea Route (NSR) to Russia next year. Discussions between Russia’s Arkhangelsk region and New Delhi have focused on leveraging the economic potential of this route. Aleksandr Tsybulsky, governor of Arkhangelsk, emphasized the growing significance of the NSR for India during an interview at the ‘Arctic – Regions’ Forum, where India was a key participant.

Economic Opportunities of the Northern Sea Route

The NSR, also known as the Arctic Route, traverses approximately 5,600 km across Russia’s Arctic waters. It is rich in hydrocarbons and valuable natural resources, including nickel, copper, and rare earth elements. Arkhangelsk, located along this route, serves as a major cargo hub connected to the Northern Dvina River.

The route remains largely ice-covered for most of the year, but climate change has extended the navigation period for vessels. Ships designed to withstand ice conditions are essential for operations along the NSR. Russia’s Rosatom, which manufactures such vessels, is expected to sign a memorandum of understanding with India regarding the NSR.

Collaborative Discussions Between India and Russia

The discussions between India and Arkhangelsk encompass various collaborative opportunities. These include constructing ships for India at local shipyards and utilizing Arkhangelsk’s port infrastructure for cargo handling. The potential for establishing manufacturing facilities near the ports in the region is also being explored.

Tsybulsky outlined the possibilities, stating that the discussions involve building ships, delivering cargo, and technological options for production around Arkhangelsk’s ports. S. Venkatesapathy, joint secretary in India’s Ministry of Shipping, participated in the forum, highlighting the bilateral interest in enhancing trade.

For Indian ships, the Arctic route could reduce sailing distances by up to 40%, cutting approximately two weeks off journeys to northern and eastern Europe compared to traditional routes through the Suez Canal. Russian President Vladimir Putin noted the increasing interest from countries like India and China in the economic opportunities presented by the NSR.
