Army Veteran Questions Tricolour Accuracy in Operation Safed Sagar Scene
Indian Army veteran Colonel Vembu Shankar has raised significant concerns regarding a scene in Netflix’s “Operation Safed Sagar: The Untold Story of the Kargil War.” He alleges that the Indian National Flag has been incorrectly positioned on the coffin of Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja in the series. This claim has sparked discussions about the accuracy and respectfulness of military portrayals in entertainment.
Concerns Over Flag Placement
Shankar shared a screengrab from the show on Instagram, highlighting a moment where Siddharth, who plays Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, is depicted through a coffin carried by characters portrayed by Mihir Ahuja and Abhay Verma. Mihir plays Flying Officer C.H. Bal Reddy, known as Baldy, while Abhay takes on the role of Flying Officer Rajpal Singh Dhaliwal, referred to as Dhali.
The veteran pointed out that the Tricolour covering Ahuja’s coffin does not adhere to the Flag Code of India. He expressed his disbelief that such an oversight could occur, especially with military advisers involved in the production. “I am shocked how the authorities at the Service Headquarters and the military advisors have overlooked this fact,” Shankar stated.
Call for Accountability
In light of his concerns, Shankar has urged the creators of the series to acknowledge the alleged error and issue a public apology through mainstream media. His call for accountability emphasizes the importance of accurately representing military traditions and symbols, particularly in a series that recounts real events from the Kargil War.
The context of Shankar’s objections is rooted in the true story of Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, an Indian Air Force officer who lost his life during the Kargil War in 1999. Ahuja was recognized for his bravery and was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra for his service.
