Raj Thackeray Questions Vivek Oberoi and R Madhavan’s Dubai Residency Amidst Their Praise for India
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray recently raised eyebrows regarding Bollywood actors Vivek Oberoi and R. Madhavan, questioning their choice to reside in Dubai despite their public endorsements of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the progress in India. Speaking at an event organized by the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena in Mumbai, Thackeray criticized a growing trend among prominent figures and industrialists to move abroad.
Criticism of Bollywood Stars
Thackeray specifically referenced Vivek Oberoi, who portrayed Modi in a 2019 biographical film. He stated, “Vivek Oberoi, who made a film on Modi and played Modi’s role in it, has also gone to live in Dubai.” He also directed his comments towards R. Madhavan, questioning, “R Madhavan who praised PM Modi – where does he live? He lives in Dubai. So if you love India so much, if you love PM Modi, if they believe that PM Modi is developing India, then why are they living in a foreign land? Why are they living in Dubai with their families?”
Thackeray further alleged that these actors would return to India to work on government-sponsored films, such as “Dhurandhar,” before heading back to their residences in Dubai. Madhavan has previously explained that he moved to Dubai during the COVID-19 pandemic to support his son’s swimming career, while Oberoi has mentioned his relocation was to expand his business interests.
Language and Online Trolling
During the same address, Thackeray addressed the language used against Prime Minister Modi during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. He echoed Modi’s sentiment that such “misguided children” should be forgiven and guided, stating, “I agree with it (PM’s statement). No one should use a language of such a low level. But he should tell people of his own party.”
Thackeray accused BJP troll groups of targeting public figures, including historical leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, as well as members of the Thackeray family. He noted that many actors now refrain from sharing their opinions publicly due to the fear of online trolling. He remarked, “Even they (BJP supporters) should be asked to stop (from using derogatory language). BJP troll teams started this. As you sow, so shall you reap.”
Protests and Public Sentiment
Thackeray also touched upon the NEET paper leak controversy, suggesting it may have triggered the CJP protests. However, he emphasized that the significant public participation reflected long-standing grievances that have accumulated over the years.
