Media Experts Gather for First All India Media Conference 2026
The Election Commission of India (ECI) recently hosted the inaugural All India Media Conference 2026, uniting over 380 media professionals from various States and Union Territories across the nation. Under the theme of “Connecting stakeholders, strengthening democracy: Role of media in elections,” the conference aimed to enhance understanding of electoral processes and emphasize the media’s vital role during elections.
Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar addressed the attendees, reiterating that Indian elections are conducted in accordance with the Constitution, electoral laws, and guidelines issued by the ECI. He highlighted the collaborative nature of the electoral process, noting that various stakeholders continuously audit the system to maintain integrity and transparency.
Shri Gyanesh Kumar emphasized that India’s Electoral Rolls, which encompass nearly 950 million voters, are living documents that are routinely updated. He pointed out that more than 1.2 million Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and over 1.5 million Booth Level Agents (BLAs) actively participate as “concurrent auditors” in this critical process.
During his speech, Kumar remarked on the record voter participation observed in recent Assembly Elections, which serves as a testament to the trust that Indian voters place in the electoral system. He expressed gratitude to all citizens who engaged in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, reinforcing the importance of voter involvement in democracy.
Objective of the Conference
The conference aimed to promote an informed understanding of various electoral processes and the transparency mechanisms established by the Constitution, as well as the Representation of the People Acts of 1950 and 1951. Participants learned about the role of technology in elections through the ECINET platform and important constitutional provisions and laws that govern media conduct during electoral periods.
Roles and Responsibilities Explained
Media professionals received in-depth briefings on the functions of Booth Level Agents, Polling Agents, and Counting Agents. These roles are crucial for ensuring transparency and facilitating political party participation throughout the electoral process.
Hands-On Learning Experience
As part of the program, conference participants engaged in hands-on demonstrations of Electoral Roll Preparation, the Polling Process, and the Counting Process. This practical experience allowed media professionals to familiarize themselves with statutory forms integral to the concurrent audit conducted by various stakeholders.
Interactive Q&A Session
The conference concluded with an interactive Question and Answer session where attendees could pose inquiries directly to CEC Shri Gyanesh Kumar, fostering a richer dialogue about the electoral process in India.
