Kargil Hosts Meet to Boost Sustainable Development Through Innovation

In a bid to enhance science, technology, and innovation (STI) initiatives for sustainable growth in Kargil, a one-day meeting titled “Science, Technology, and Innovation Need Identification for Sustainable Development of Kargil” was organized on July 15, 2026. This collaborative effort involved the CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (NIScPR), Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (National Coordinating Institution-IIT Delhi), regional partner IIT Jammu, and the Government Degree College, Kargil.

The gathering was part of the CSIR-NIScPR project named “Leveraging CSIR Technologies for Rural Development: Expanding Initiatives and Identifying Opportunities,” which aims to spread indigenous technologies designed at CSIR laboratories to tackle rural development hurdles across India. Knowledge partners included the CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) from Mysuru and the CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST) based in Thiruvananthapuram.

Addressing Local Challenges

Kargil, known for its vast potential in sectors like agriculture, horticulture, and renewable energy, faces significant challenges due to its geographical isolation and harsh climate. The meeting focused on identifying specific local technology needs and on exploring practical interventions that can improve livelihoods, efficiency, and climate resilience in the area.

Over 100 participants, including scientists, policymakers, academics, entrepreneurs, farmers, and students, engaged in spirited discussions aimed at identifying priority areas for technological intervention. This event was a unique opportunity for stakeholders to converse about critical needs within the region.

Inaugural Session Highlights

The inaugural session featured prominent figures from CSIR-NIScPR, IIT Delhi, IIT Jammu, and the Government Degree College, Kargil. Ms. Disket Angmo, Principal of Government Degree College, welcomed attendees, followed by Dr. Geetha Vani Rayasam, Director of CSIR-NIScPR, who highlighted the significance of science-driven partnerships in fostering sustainable livelihoods and inclusive development. Key speakers, including Prof. Ranjana Aggarwal and Dr. Yogesh Suman, stressed collaboration as vital for Kargil’s development.

Technological Innovations Discussed

The first technical session, chaired by Dr. Nassreen F. Kacho, highlighted technological innovations relevant to the Himalayan region. Experts from esteemed research institutions discussed advancements like dehumidified drying technology, food processing innovations, and the cultivation of Heeng, emphasizing the need for technological support in local agriculture.

The second session, focusing on funding opportunities and local needs, featured presentations from various experts discussing financial assistance, technology adoption strategies, and collaborative options for rural development.

Future Roadmap for Kargil

The event concluded with a productive consultation session where attendees outlined pressing areas requiring science and technology interventions, such as sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and eco-tourism. Participants underscored the necessity for institutional collaboration and technology demonstrations tailored to regional needs.

The meeting’s outcomes, including valuable recommendations, will aid in developing a roadmap for collaborative efforts among CSIR labs, academic institutions, and local communities. The engagement has bolstered awareness of CSIR-developed technologies and their applicability to the specific challenges faced in Kargil.

This successful initiative reflects the ongoing commitment of all participating organizations to fostering sustainable and inclusive development in the Kargil region, marking another step in CSIR-NIScPR’s dedication to evidence-based policy research and advancing science-led rural development.
