NCAHP Launches Competency-Based Curriculum for Medical Lab Technology
In a pivotal move to elevate the quality and global standing of allied and healthcare education in India, the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) has unveiled a new Competency-Based Curriculum for the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT). This initiative, part of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s efforts, was announced via a notification on July 1, 2026.
Educational institutions currently offering or planning to introduce the DMLT program are encouraged to adopt this curriculum starting from the Academic Year 2026–27, with full implementation required by the Academic Year 2027–28.
This two-year diploma is tailored for students who have completed their Class XII in the Science stream, including Physics, Chemistry, and Biology from reliable educational boards. The new curriculum represents a significant shift from traditional teaching methods, focusing on a competency-based education model. It emphasizes the development of Knowledge, Skills, Values, and Attitudes (KSVA) essential for providing high-quality diagnostic laboratory services.
Curriculum Goals and Structure
The curriculum aims to equip future Medical Laboratory Associates with the necessary competencies to perform duties throughout the laboratory testing phases, including pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes. A crucial aspect of this training is adhering to quality assurance protocols, prioritizing patient safety, and upholding ethical standards in professional practice.
Prior to this, the NCAHP had introduced competency-based curricula for Bachelor and Master programs in Medical Laboratory Science on October 15, 2025, set to take effect from the same Academic Year 2026–27. In total, the NCAHP has released 16 competency-based curricula across various allied and healthcare disciplines, all to be implemented from 2026–27. These disciplines include:
- Applied Psychology and Behavioral Health
- Physiotherapy
- Optometry
- Nutrition and Dietetics
- Medical Radiology and Imaging Technology
- Radiotherapy
- Dialysis Therapy Technology
- Health Information Management
- Anesthesia and Operation Theatre Technology

Aligning with National Goals
The NCAHP, established to ensure high educational standards in allied healthcare, aligns this initiative with the Union Budget’s vision for 2026–27, aiming to produce an additional one lakh Allied and Healthcare Professionals over the next five years. This comprehensive reform under the guidance of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is designed to modernize healthcare education to meet both national needs and international standards.
The introduction of competency-based curricula is expected to yield highly skilled professionals, with a strong emphasis on clinical exposure and practical training, ready to address the increasing demand for qualified allied healthcare professionals in India. This also aims to enhance their opportunities for employment and professional mobility on a global scale.
To facilitate this transition, the NCAHP is proactively collaborating with universities and educational institutions across the country. Recently, eight national-level webinars were held, drawing significant participation and showcasing a strong interest in adopting the new curricula.
The NCAHP continues to provide ongoing support and guidance for institutions to navigate this transition smoothly, emphasizing its commitment to standardize and elevate healthcare education across India.
