NESAC Boosts Northeast Development with Advanced Space Technology
During a recent visit to the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) in Umiam, Meghalaya, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, highlighted the centre’s critical role in fostering national strategic goals and economic growth in the Northeast region. He emphasized the application of space technology in various sectors, aimed at bringing tangible benefits to local communities.
Dr. Singh pointed out that NESAC is currently engaged in essential geospatial mapping projects, including the India-Myanmar border and inter-state boundaries within Northeast India. The ongoing initiatives span numerous fields such as agriculture, disaster management, and natural resource management, thus effectively enhancing governance and resource planning.
Upon his arrival, Dr. Singh was welcomed by Dr. S.P. Aggarwal, Director of NESAC, who shared insights into the Centre’s accomplishments and its extensive portfolio of projects. The presentation showcased nearly 130 initiatives, with around 50 projects recently completed and 78 projects still in progress. These diverse projects address key topics including water resources, urban planning, geoinformatics, satellite communication, and disaster management.
Strategic Partnerships for Development
Acknowledging the Centre’s expanding influence, Dr. Singh described NESAC as a pivotal link between cutting-edge science and the developmental needs of the eight Northeastern states. He urged for closer collaboration among NESAC, the North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC), and state governments. This partnership aims to enhance the bamboo mapping initiative, which could bolster the bamboo industry’s value chain and create sustainable livelihoods in the region.
Additionally, Dr. Singh called for advancements in NESAC’s flood early warning system, advocating for enhanced precision to deliver timely information to communities at risk. He encouraged collaboration with state governments for the broader adoption of successful water harvesting models like that implemented at the Ramakrishna Mission in Cherrapunjee, to foster long-term water security.
Emphasis on Geospatial Technologies
Highlighting the strategic role of geospatial technologies, Dr. Singh stressed that NESAC should continue to aid national objectives in crucial border areas while working closely with relevant agencies. He also called for the enhancement of the GeoTourism ‘ManzilNE’ dashboard, suggesting a greater involvement of the private tourism sector to showcase the Northeast’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
Dr. Singh encouraged NESAC to deepen its collaborative efforts with central ministries, state governments, academia, research institutions, and private industry. Such partnerships will accelerate the adoption of space-based applications, turning scientific innovations into impactful solutions that address local developmental challenges.
He concluded by stating that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the Northeast has emerged as a dynamic growth hub, with science and technology driving inclusive development. Dr. Singh expressed confidence that NESAC would continue playing a vital role in enhancing governance, building disaster resilience, and ensuring sustainable resource management in the region.
