Supreme Court Upholds Shah Rukh Khan’s Mannat Renovation Plans, Dismisses Challenge

The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition challenging the renovation approvals for Mannat, the iconic seaside bungalow owned by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri Khan. According to a report by NDTV India, the court emphasized that homeowners have the right to renovate their properties as long as they adhere to legal requirements. This ruling clears the way for the ongoing renovation project at Mannat.

Petitioner’s Concerns Over Environmental Approvals

The petitioner raised concerns regarding the necessary statutory approvals for the renovation, particularly emphasizing compliance with environmental norms. Senior counsel Shoaib Alam, representing the petitioner, argued that clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change was essential for the project. He claimed that the alleged violations were still occurring and that such approval is mandatory for projects exceeding Rs 5 crores.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court bench questioned the intent behind the petition. Chief Justice Surya Kant pointed out that Mannat is a private residence, and its occupants have the right to make changes or renovations within the legal framework. The petitioner’s counsel requested that the matter be referred back to the National Green Tribunal, but the Supreme Court declined this request. The bench clarified that the celebrity status of the bungalow’s owners did not influence the case’s consideration.

Previous Rulings by the National Green Tribunal

The Supreme Court’s dismissal follows a previous ruling by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which had already rejected an appeal against the environmental and coastal approvals granted for Mannat’s renovation and expansion. The NGT determined that the project complied with environmental regulations, allowing the expansion work to proceed.

The appeal to the NGT was filed by social activist Santosh Daundkar in March 2025. It challenged the Coastal Regulation Zone clearance issued by the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority on January 3. The appeal alleged that the approval process for Mannat’s expansion did not adhere to environmental norms, a claim that parties associated with the project denied, asserting that all necessary permissions had been obtained in accordance with the rules.

The controversy primarily revolves around Gauri Khan’s proposal to add two additional floors to a six-story annex building at Mannat. With the Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss the challenge, the expansion project is now poised to move forward without further hindrance.
