Civil Engineering Careers Surge Amid India’s Infrastructure Growth

India’s rapid infrastructure development is sparking newfound enthusiasm among aspiring engineers, especially in the field of Civil Engineering. As large-scale infrastructure projects blossom, students from prestigious institutions such as IITs and NITs are increasingly drawn to careers that contribute to the nation’s growth.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is playing a pivotal role in this trend. By establishing clear pathways that align engineering education with professional opportunities in the National Highway sector, NHAI is making a significant impact. Each year, NHAI recruits approximately 100 engineering graduates through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for technical roles, with many candidates qualifying for the position of Deputy Manager. This shift highlights an increasing desirability among top engineering graduates to engage in National Highway infrastructure projects.

NHAI’s Internship Programs Expand Opportunities

In a bid to enhance industry-academia connections, NHAI launched a structured Internship Program in December 2025. This initiative includes a one-month Winter Internship for Civil Engineering students, followed by a more extensive six-month Term Internship. Participants receive a competitive stipend of Rs. 20,000 per month, making the program one of the most sought-after experiential learning opportunities in the country.

Following the success of these initiatives, NHAI expanded its Summer Internship Program for 2026, welcoming 423 student interns from various disciplines to 125 NHAI field offices and 51 functional verticals at its headquarters. This expansive outreach attracted a strong contingent from elite technical institutions—59 students from IITs and 282 from NITs—demonstrating the growing appeal of careers linked to India’s National Highway development program.

Reforming the Professional Landscape for Engineers

NHAI is also committed to enhancing the overall professional environment for civil engineers. Recent reforms include the introduction of fixed-cost Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), designed to ensure fair and competitive compensation for engineering services. The organization is also implementing attractive remuneration frameworks to draw distinguished engineering professionals for DPR and supervision consultancy roles.

By cultivating a robust and structured learning environment along with merit-based recruitment practices, NHAI is not only meeting the nation’s increasing demand for skilled engineering talent but also motivating a new generation of civil engineers to contribute to the establishment of a top-tier National Highway network.
