New MoU Aims to Boost Electric Vehicle Adoption in Delhi-NCR

In a significant move to modernize the transportation sector, the Government of India has finalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as part of the PARIVARTAN scheme aimed at replacing aging trucks and buses in the Delhi–NCR region. The agreement, which was signed yesterday, involves the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and Olectra Greentech Limited, with additional partnerships from IPLTECH Electric Private Limited and TIVOLT Electric Vehicles Private Limited.

This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to fostering eco-friendly transportation solutions. As part of this agreement, the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will extend an enticing 8 percent discount off the ex-showroom price for qualifying trucks and buses purchased under the scheme. For electric vehicles, this discount is capped at the amount applicable to an equivalent Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicle based on Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW).

Government Incentives to Enhance Participation

In addition to the OEM discounts, the Central Government is set to offer further incentives aimed at encouraging the adoption of new vehicles. Eligible beneficiaries will receive a 5 percent interest subvention along with fixed monthly fuel vouchers for up to five years. Moreover, participating State Governments will play a crucial role by providing up to 100 percent concession on motor vehicle taxes for ten years, alongside waiving registration fees.

Gathering Momentum with OEM Participation

This initiative has already garnered support from nine other prominent OEMs, including Ashok Leyland, Switch Mobility, Tata Motors, Mahindra and Mahindra, and others. Together, these manufacturers possess over 95 percent market share in the trucks and buses segment, ensuring robust implementation of the PARIVARTAN scheme across the region.

The combined efforts of these companies, alongside government incentives, reflect a unified approach to enhancing the transportation infrastructure in Delhi–NCR. This scheme not only emphasizes environmental sustainability by promoting electric vehicles but also aims to economically empower beneficiaries through various financial aids.

The MoU signifies a pivotal step forward for India’s ambitions to reduce vehicular emissions and accelerate the transition to electric mobility in key urban areas.
