Government Unites to Drive TB Elimination Across India
The Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, led a significant inter-ministerial meeting today aimed at accelerating the implementation of the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. He was joined by Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports, and Shri Sanjay Seth, Union Minister of State for Defence. The discussions focused on fostering a cooperative approach among various government ministries to enrich their ongoing efforts in combating tuberculosis (TB) nationwide.
During the meeting, Minister Nadda referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks about the potential of India’s youth in transforming the TB elimination campaign into a nationwide movement. He emphasized that to effectively eradicate tuberculosis, it is crucial for every ministry, institution, and community member to play an active role, using their unique outreach capabilities. Young people, educational institutions, and communities, along with government entities, are seen as pivotal in boosting awareness, encouraging early detection, and ensuring treatment adherence for TB patients.
Engaging Youth and Communities
To further engage the youth, Nadda encouraged the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to enhance their involvement by mobilizing MY Bharat volunteers and NCC cadets. He proposed an expansion of the existing TB Mukt Bharat Toli model and called for volunteer-led initiatives to conduct screening camps. Efforts will also focus on training volunteers through the Experiential Learning Programme, equipping them to act as Lead Ni-kshay Mitras who can support TB awareness in schools, colleges, and communities.
From the Ministry of Defence, Nadda appealed for continued support from NCC cadets and defence personnel in promoting community awareness. He suggested integrating TB education into the training programs of NCC and utilizing special occasions for awareness activities, ensuring that defence personnel play a significant role in public health initiatives.
Collaborative Strategies for TB Elimination
Dr. Mandaviya stressed the importance of coordinated action to reinforce the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. He pointed out the potential of nearly 800,000 medical students across the country who could contribute to the campaign. He advocated for utilizing participants from the Pratibha Setu programme in District TB Coordination Committees, enhancing communication and coordination among medical colleges, the government, and local health officials.
The meeting also discussed creating a TB-free workplace framework which would integrate TB screening into occupational health practices for sectors at higher risk, including mining and construction. Collaborating with employers, trade unions, and labour welfare organizations is vital to ensure the well-being of workers undergoing TB treatment.
Success of the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan
Launched in December 2024, the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan has already made commendable strides in India’s battle against tuberculosis. More than 280 million people have been screened for TB, leading to the identification of over 3.9 million cases. The program has also facilitated significant patient support initiatives, with registrations from over 570,000 Ni-kshay Mitras contributing to nutrition distribution and personalized care for more than 2 million patients.
The meeting concluded with an agreement on leveraging youth organizations and extensive outreach capabilities to advance community mobilization efforts for TB screening and awareness. Participants emphasized the necessity of strong inter-sectoral collaboration to enhance prevention, treatment adherence, nutritional support, and overall community engagement in the TB fight.
