Government Reports 15 Ships Transporting Urea, DAP, and Sulphur to India Cross Hormuz

Despite recent disruptions in the Middle East, India’s fertiliser supply chain remains stable. The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers reported that 15 out of 20 vessels carrying fertilisers and raw materials have successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz. These shipments include significant quantities of urea, DAP, and sulphur, all expected to reach Indian ports on schedule.

Shipment Details

The ministry confirmed that eight vessels are transporting 3.32 lakh tonnes of urea, four vessels are carrying 2.57 lakh tonnes of DAP, and three vessels are delivering 1.11 lakh tonnes of sulphur. Additionally, five more vessels are set for shipment, including one with 0.25 lakh tonnes of ammonia and another with 0.45 lakh tonnes of urea. Loading operations for two additional urea vessels and one sulphur vessel are also underway, with all consignments anticipated to arrive as planned.

Supply Chain Management

The Centre noted that despite the conflict affecting maritime movement, fertiliser availability has remained uninterrupted due to “timely planning, effective coordination, and continuous monitoring.” The government has secured new supply sources through diplomatic efforts. Urea supplies have been arranged from countries including Oman, Malaysia, and Nigeria, while DAP and NPK fertilisers are being sourced via the Red Sea route from nations such as Russia and Egypt.

Domestic Production and Stock Levels

Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers JP Nadda acknowledged the global supply chain disruptions have led to increased fertiliser prices and longer transit times. However, he emphasized that the government has taken measures to protect farmers’ interests. Natural gas supplies to fertiliser plants, which had dropped to 65% during the disruptions, have now been restored to full capacity, allowing all urea manufacturing plants to operate at maximum output.

In the first quarter of FY27, domestic fertiliser production exceeded targets, with urea production reaching 71.55 lakh tonnes against a target of 67.86 lakh tonnes. DAP output was 9.84 lakh tonnes, surpassing the target of 8.61 lakh tonnes. As of July 2, India has secured 197.56 lakh tonnes of fertiliser, covering over 51% of the annual requirement of 383.9 lakh tonnes. Current stock levels include 69.08 lakh tonnes of urea and 16.64 lakh tonnes of DAP, contributing to a total fertiliser availability of 163.35 lakh tonnes.
