BCCI Advocates for Jasprit Bumrah’s Full Participation in Upcoming WTC Cycle

As India celebrates its recent T20 World Cup victory, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is already focusing on future challenges, particularly the World Test Championship (WTC) and the 2027 ODI World Cup. A key concern for the selectors and team management is managing the workload of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who is expected to play all nine Tests in the upcoming WTC season. With India currently positioned sixth in the WTC standings, the selectors are prioritizing the revival of the team’s chances in this cycle while also considering Bumrah’s fitness and performance.

Upcoming Test Matches and Bumrah’s Workload Management

India’s cricket calendar includes a one-off Test against Afghanistan in Chandigarh on June 6, which is not part of the WTC cycle. Following this, the team will embark on two Test series in Sri Lanka and New Zealand later this year. The highlight will be a five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in January next year. The BCCI is keen on ensuring that Bumrah remains fit to participate in all four Tests during the tours of Sri Lanka and New Zealand. However, the selectors are also contemplating resting him for certain ODI series to maintain his freshness for the crucial home Tests against Australia.

Bumrah’s unique bowling action places additional stress on his body, making it essential for the team management to monitor his workload closely. Last year, he participated in three out of five Tests in England, and the board is now focused on having him play whenever he is clinically fit. Given that Bumrah played all four home Tests following the England series, the selectors are optimistic about his contributions in the upcoming matches.

Strategic Focus on Test Cricket

The BCCI has emphasized the importance of prioritizing Test cricket, particularly after India’s disappointing performances in recent series. The selectors have communicated that first-choice Test players must be available for selection if they are fit. The Afghanistan Test, while outside the WTC cycle, is viewed as an opportunity for match practice. The decision regarding player participation will be made after assessing their workloads post-IPL.

Shubman Gill, India’s Test captain, has advocated for allowing players adequate recovery time between formats to prepare for significant Test series. The last encounter with Afghanistan in 2018 saw all top players participate except for Virat Kohli, who was sidelined due to injury. The BCCI aims to ensure that the team is well-prepared and competitive in the upcoming Test matches.

Emerging Middle Order Prospects

In addition to managing Bumrah’s workload, the BCCI is also looking at potential middle-order options for the Test squad. Players like Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel, and Ruturaj Gaikwad are being considered as viable candidates. The team management believes that Jurel could serve as a pure batter, while Padikkal is seen as a strong contender to challenge Sai Sudharsan for the No. 3 batting position. Gaikwad’s ability to handle turning pitches in Indian conditions makes him a valuable asset for the team.

The selectors are keen to integrate these emerging talents into the squad, recognizing the need for a robust middle order to support the team’s ambitions in both the WTC and the ODI World Cup. As the BCCI continues to strategize for the future, the focus remains on building a competitive team capable of excelling in all formats of the game.
