Rupee Strengthens: Currency Gains 33 Paise to Reach 92.85 Against US Dollar
Rupee strengthened against the US dollar on Monday, gaining 33 paise to reach 92.85 in early trading. This increase follows the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) intervention to support the currency amid ongoing global economic pressures. The RBI has implemented measures to curb speculative trading, including capping banks’ net open positions at $100 million, which traders believe is beginning to influence the rupee’s performance positively.
Rupee’s Performance in Early Trading
In the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at a weaker position of 93.13 against the dollar but quickly gained ground as trading progressed. By mid-morning, it had strengthened to 92.85. This rise follows a notable performance on Thursday, when the rupee surged by 152 paise to close at 93.18, marking one of its most significant single-day increases in recent years. The currency’s volatility is partly attributed to the RBI’s recent actions aimed at tightening regulations in the onshore forward market. Markets were closed on Friday in observance of Good Friday, which may have contributed to the fluctuations observed.
RBI’s Measures to Stabilize the Currency
The RBI’s decision to limit banks’ net open positions to $100 million is part of a broader strategy to mitigate speculative trading in the forex market. Traders have noted that these measures are starting to reflect positively in the rupee’s movement. However, despite the recent gains, underlying pressures persist. Forex market participants have pointed to ongoing foreign capital outflows, a strengthening US dollar, and rising crude oil prices as factors that continue to weigh on the domestic currency. Additionally, geopolitical uncertainties have contributed to a cautious market sentiment.
Geopolitical Tensions and Economic Outlook
Recent geopolitical developments have further complicated the economic landscape. Tensions escalated after US President Donald Trump issued a warning to Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz, setting a deadline for compliance that could lead to military action. In light of these developments, CR Forex Advisors’ Managing Director, Amit Pabari, provided a near-term outlook for the rupee. He indicated that while the RBI’s actions are effective, persistent geopolitical tensions and high oil prices could challenge the rupee’s ability to maintain its gains. Pabari suggested that the rupee might strengthen further towards the 91.50–92.00 range, but warned that volatility is likely to continue.
Market Reactions and Broader Economic Indicators
In addition to the currency fluctuations, domestic equity markets opened on a weak note, with the Sensex dropping 270.13 points to 73,049.42 and the Nifty declining by 93.60 points to 22,619.50. Data from the exchanges indicated that foreign institutional investors were net sellers on Thursday, offloading equities worth Rs 9,931.13 crore. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which measures the US currency against a basket of six major currencies, rose by 0.14 percent to 100.17. Brent crude futures also saw an increase, climbing 0.66 percent to $109.75 per barrel. These developments highlight the interconnectedness of global economic factors and their impact on the Indian market.
