Government Guarantees Robust Fuel Security Amid Rumors
The Indian government has assured citizens that the country’s fuel supply remains stable and secure, dismissing recent rumors of shortages. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas emphasized that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG across the nation, and warned against a misinformation campaign aimed at inciting panic. This reassurance follows previous clarifications regarding LPG refill booking timelines, which the government stated remain unchanged.
Fuel Supply Stability Assured
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reiterated that India is functioning as an “oasis of energy security.” In a recent press release, the government highlighted that India ranks as the world’s fourth-largest refiner and fifth-largest exporter of petroleum products, supplying refined fuel to over 150 countries. The Centre confirmed that the availability of petrol and diesel is “structurally assured,” with all retail fuel outlets across the country operating normally. There are no instructions for rationing fuel, and unlike other nations facing severe restrictions, India does not require such measures. Reports of localized shortages were attributed to panic buying fueled by misinformation on social media. The ministry assured that despite temporary spikes in demand, fuel supply remains uninterrupted, with oil company depots working around the clock to enhance distribution. Additionally, oil companies have extended credit limits to petrol pumps to ensure a smooth flow of working capital.
Crude Oil Supply and Production
Addressing concerns regarding global supply routes, the ministry stated that India is currently receiving higher volumes of crude oil from over 41 international suppliers, compensating for any disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz. The increased availability from global markets, particularly from the western hemisphere, has fully offset any potential shortages. All Indian refineries are operating at over 100% capacity utilization, and the ministry confirmed that crude oil requirements for the next 60 days have already been secured, ensuring no supply gaps. This proactive approach has been taken to maintain a steady supply of crude oil, with Indian oil companies having already tied up necessary supplies for the upcoming months.
LPG Supply and Consumer Assurance
In light of rising concerns about LPG amid the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, the ministry assured that there is no shortage of LPG in India. Production has been significantly ramped up, with domestic refinery output increasing by 40%, reaching 50 TMT per day, which covers more than 60% of the country’s daily requirement. The ministry has secured 800 TMT of LPG cargoes, currently en route from various countries, and is distributing over 50 lakh cylinders daily. Although demand briefly surged to 89 lakh cylinders due to panic buying, it has since normalized. To prevent hoarding and black marketing, the allocation of commercial cylinders has been increased to 50% in consultation with state governments.
Government’s Warning Against Misinformation
The ministry expressed serious concern over the spread of misleading information on social media, including videos and posts that misrepresent the fuel situation in India. It clarified that routine administrative orders have been misinterpreted as emergency declarations, causing unnecessary public anxiety. The government urged citizens to rely solely on official communications for accurate information. Furthermore, it warned that spreading misinformation about essential commodities is a punishable offense under the law, and strict action will be taken against those responsible for creating panic. The ministry reassured the public that India remains secure in its fuel supply for the foreseeable future.
