Ganga Rejuvenation Efforts Surge with 173 STPs Operational

As part of the ongoing Namami Gange Programme, 173 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) are now operational as of January 2026. Additionally, eight more STPs have recently been completed, with an expectation to complete one more by March 31, further enhancing the sewage management system along the River Ganga. The government is closely monitoring ongoing projects to ensure their timely completion.

National Mission for Clean Ganga’s Objectives

The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) plays a crucial role in the effective abatement of pollution and the rejuvenation of the River Ganga. The mission employs a river basin approach that emphasizes pollution control and conservation of the Ganga’s main stem and its significant tributaries, all within the framework of the Namami Gange Programme.

Supporting Rejuvenation of Smaller Rivers

In a bid to expand river cleaning efforts, the NMCG is supporting state governments in the rejuvenation of smaller rivers and tributaries within the Ganga basin. This initiative includes providing technical guidance and support for the planning and implementation of suitable rejuvenation measures, in collaboration with relevant departments.

Innovative Technologies for River Management

Under the Namami Gange Programme, advanced survey technologies such as LiDAR, UAV, and drone-based surveys have been introduced to enhance river basin management. A unique Drain Dashboard has also been developed, delivering authentic videographic visualizations and mappings of outfalls along the Ganga’s mainstem. This dashboard offers geo-tagged information that empowers state and district-level authorities to monitor pollution sources effectively, prioritize interventions, and respond appropriately.

Environmental Flow Monitoring

In line with its commitment to environmental sustainability, the Government of India notified minimum environmental flows for the River Ganga on October 9, 2018. Since January 1, 2019, the Central Water Commission (CWC) has been monitoring 11 projects to ensure compliance with these e-flow standards. Quarterly progress reports indicate that most projects adhere to the required e-flow compliance, with necessary corrective actions implemented in instances of non-compliance.
