LPG Supply Alert: Expansion of Commercial Cylinder Rollout to 29 States Amid Intensified Raids on Hoarding
Distribution of commercial LPG cylinders has commenced across 29 states and Union Territories in India, as authorities ramp up efforts to combat hoarding and black-marketing amid rising concerns over cooking gas supplies. A senior official from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Sujata Sharma, confirmed that panic bookings for LPG refills have surged, despite the availability of adequate stocks to meet household demand. The government is prioritizing domestic consumers while closely monitoring the geopolitical situation affecting energy supplies from Gulf countries.
Government’s Assurance on LPG Supply
Sujata Sharma emphasized that there are no reports of dry-out situations at retail outlets, and refineries are operating at full capacity. She reassured the public that India has sufficient petrol and diesel supplies, negating the need for imports. The government has been proactive in managing the LPG supply chain, particularly in light of recent geopolitical tensions that have impacted energy shipments from the Middle East. India relies heavily on imports for its energy needs, sourcing 88 percent of its crude oil and significant portions of its natural gas and LPG from this region. The ongoing conflict has disrupted traditional supply routes, but the government is taking steps to ensure that household consumers remain unaffected.
Panic Buying and Booking Restrictions
The surge in LPG refill bookings has been alarming, with numbers rising from an average of 55 lakh bookings per day to around 88 lakh. This increase is attributed to panic buying among consumers. Sharma noted that while daily deliveries have remained stable at approximately 50 lakh cylinders, the spike in bookings has led to the implementation of restrictions. In urban areas, a minimum gap of 25 days is required between bookings, while rural areas face a 45-day gap. These measures aim to manage the supply effectively and prevent further panic among consumers.
Increased Domestic Production and Alternative Solutions
To alleviate supply pressures, the government has ramped up domestic LPG production significantly. The increase has reached 31 percent, following earlier boosts of 10, 25, and 28 percent. Additionally, state-run GAIL has been working with city gas distribution operators to encourage the use of piped natural gas (PNG) for commercial consumers facing LPG shortages. The government is actively promoting the transition from LPG to PNG where feasible, aiming to ensure that commercial users have access to necessary fuel supplies.
Enforcement Measures and Consumer Guidance
In response to the rising concerns over hoarding and black-marketing, enforcement agencies have intensified inspections and raids across various states. Authorities have conducted surprise checks at numerous locations, leading to the registration of FIRs against individuals involved in illegal activities. Oil marketing companies have also established inspection teams to monitor LPG distributorships and retail outlets. To further ease consumer concerns, the government is promoting digital booking methods, urging consumers to utilize SMS, WhatsApp, and mobile apps for their LPG bookings. Sharma reassured the public that there is no need for panic, encouraging reliance on official information channels for updates on the situation.
