Ex-India Captain Expresses Outrage Over Super 8 Debacle: ‘We Were Humiliated on All Fronts’

Former Indian cricket captain Kris Srikkanth has expressed his disappointment with the Indian batting lineup after their significant 76-run defeat to South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eight match held in Ahmedabad. Chasing a target of 188 runs, India faltered dramatically, collapsing to 111 all out in just 19 overs. The downfall began early when opener Ishan Kishan was dismissed for a duck on the very first ball he faced, falling to Aiden Markram’s part-time off-spin. Srikkanth’s critique of the team’s performance was sharp, highlighting issues with batting order and decision-making.

Batting Collapse and Key Dismissals

India’s batting performance against South Africa was marked by a series of early wickets that set the tone for their collapse. The team lost Ishan Kishan in the first over, which was a significant blow to their chase. Following Kishan’s dismissal, the batting order struggled to find stability. Suryakumar Yadav, who came in at No. 4, managed only 18 runs off 22 balls, while Hardik Pandya, typically a key player in pressure situations, was pushed down to No. 7 and scored just 18 runs from 17 balls. This lack of contribution from the top order left India reeling at 26 for 3 by the fifth over, and they never recovered from that precarious position.

Criticism of Batting Order Decisions

Srikkanth was particularly vocal about the team’s batting order, questioning the decision to promote Washington Sundar to No. 5 when the team was in dire straits. Sundar’s performance was lackluster, as he scored only 11 runs off 11 balls. Srikkanth argued that established finishers like Pandya should have been given priority in the batting lineup, especially in a critical match. He emphasized that Pandya’s experience in high-pressure situations warranted a higher batting position, suggesting that the decision to send him in at No. 7 was a significant miscalculation.

Impact on Team Morale and Future Matches

The heavy defeat has raised concerns about the mental state of the Indian batting unit moving forward in the tournament. Srikkanth warned that such a loss could lead to a negative mindset among the players, affecting their performance in upcoming matches. He noted that India’s batting has been inconsistent throughout the tournament, often relying on a few standout performances to bail them out. In this match, aside from Shivam Dube’s 42 runs, no other batsman managed to score more than 20, marking one of the team’s most disappointing outings in recent memory. As the Super Eight campaign hangs in the balance, the Indian team will need to regroup and address these issues to remain competitive in the tournament.
