Shahid Afridi Criticizes Son-in-Law Shaheen Shah Afridi and Babar Azam Following 61-Run Loss

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has sharply criticized the senior players of the national cricket team following their significant 61-run defeat to India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at R Premadasa Stadium. The loss, led by a strong performance from India’s Suryakumar Yadav, has left Pakistan in a precarious position, requiring a victory against Namibia to advance to the Super 8s. Afridi has called for drastic changes, suggesting the exclusion of key players, including Babar Azam, Shadab Khan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi, to make way for fresh talent.

Afridi’s Call for Change

In a candid discussion on Samaa TV, Afridi did not shy away from expressing his disappointment with the team’s senior members. He emphasized the need for the management to make bold decisions ahead of the critical match against Namibia. Afridi stated, “Drop Shaheen, drop Shadab, and drop Babar. Try fresh faces against Namibia and give the new players a chance to build confidence.” His remarks reflect a growing frustration with the lack of consistent performances from seasoned players who have had ample opportunities to prove themselves. Afridi’s comments carry weight, especially considering his familial connection to Shaheen Shah Afridi, who is married to his daughter.

Captain’s Reflection on the Match

Following the defeat, Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, particularly in the bowling department. He noted that the spinners, who had been reliable in previous matches, failed to perform on a pitch that offered assistance. “We were believing in our spinners, and they had an off day today,” Agha remarked during the post-match presentation. He pointed out that the execution of their game plan was lacking, which ultimately hindered their performance. The captain also highlighted the importance of a strong start in T20 matches, stating that losing early wickets puts the team at a disadvantage.

Batting Struggles and Missed Opportunities

Agha further elaborated on the batting unit’s struggles, admitting that they did not adapt well to the conditions. He described the pitch as “a bit tacky,” indicating that the ball was gripping more than expected. This led to a failure in execution, both in bowling and batting. “We didn’t apply ourselves and gave us a chance to go deep in the game,” he said, emphasizing the need for better adaptation to the match conditions. The captain’s insights reveal a team grappling with pressure and the need for a strategic overhaul as they prepare for their next crucial encounter against Namibia.
