China Implements Strict Visa Regulations for Indian Travelers
More Indians are expressing interest in traveling to China, driven by increased aviation capacity, competitive hotel rates, and social media influence. However, this growing enthusiasm may face challenges due to stricter visa procedures and extended processing times. Travel industry experts report a rise in visa rejection rates and delays since the introduction of new rules last December, which require applicants to navigate a more complex application process.
New Visa Application Process
The revised visa application process for travelers to China has introduced several new steps that applicants must follow. Initially, individuals are required to complete an online application form and upload essential documents, including their passport, photographs, and other supporting materials. Additionally, applicants must provide a printout of their payment confirmation email. Following this submission, they must wait for preliminary verification and online approval. In some instances, the authorities may request further documentation or corrections via email. If an application is marked as ‘rejected,’ candidates must modify and resubmit their forms. Once the application is approved, applicants receive a confirmation email, allowing them to visit the visa application center with the necessary documents for physical submission.
Increased Scrutiny and Rejection Rates
Travel industry professionals have noted a significant increase in visa rejection rates since the new rules took effect. Mohak Nahta, founder and CEO of Atlys, a visa services firm, reported that both processing times and rejection rates have escalated since December. He emphasized that there is now heightened scrutiny, particularly regarding applicants’ financial statements. Travelers are now required to demonstrate a minimum bank balance of ₹1 lakh maintained consistently over the past three months. This additional scrutiny, combined with the new online pre-approval stage, has contributed to longer overall processing timelines.
Impact on Travel Plans
Ajay Prakash, founder of Nomad Travels and former president of the Travel Agents Federation of India, highlighted that the new visa process has resulted in delays in approvals. He noted that many travelers are experiencing longer wait times for their applications to be processed. As travel resumes after five years, with the reinstatement of direct flights, the volume of applications is increasing, leading to a backlog. Despite these challenges, interest in traveling to China is expanding beyond traditional tourist hotspots.
Expanding Travel Destinations
The demand for travel to China is no longer limited to major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi’an. Neeraj Singh Dev, executive vice president at Thomas Cook (India), indicated that Indian tourists are now exploring a wider range of destinations, including Chengdu, Chongqing, Zhangjiajie, Yichang, and the Yangtze River cruise circuit. Improved connectivity and cost-effective flight options, such as low-cost routes operated by IndiGo to Guangzhou and Air India flights from Delhi, are making it easier for travelers to access these new destinations. As interest in China grows, travelers are encouraged to prepare for the more complex visa application process ahead.
