India’s Coach Discusses Rohit Sharma’s Low ODI Performance as Virat Kohli Shines
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma continue to be the cornerstone of India’s ODI team, drawing attention every time they step onto the field. With both players focusing solely on ODIs, discussions surrounding their performance, workload, and future—especially regarding the 2027 ODI World Cup—have intensified. Kohli has been in exceptional form, recently reclaiming the No. 1 spot in the ICC ODI rankings, while Rohit has faced scrutiny during the ongoing series against New Zealand.
Kohli’s recent performances have been nothing short of remarkable. The seasoned batsman has recorded five consecutive scores of fifty or more, including two centuries, solidifying his status as a run-machine. At 37 years old, he now ranks second only to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar on the all-time international runs list. His resurgence in form has reignited discussions about his legacy and potential to reach the milestone of 100 international centuries.
In contrast, Rohit Sharma’s recent outings have raised eyebrows. The Indian captain has managed scores of just 26 and 24 in the first two ODIs against New Zealand. Despite these modest performances, Ryan ten Doeschate, India’s assistant coach, has downplayed concerns regarding Rohit’s form. He attributed the struggles to challenging match conditions and a lack of recent game time rather than any technical flaws. Ten Doeschate noted that the wickets have not been conducive to batting, making it difficult for Rohit to find his rhythm.
Rohit’s approach to batting has also come under scrutiny, but ten Doeschate dismissed the notion that the captain has changed his style. He emphasized that Rohit is a naturally aggressive player who excels at timing the ball. The assistant coach reiterated that Rohit’s recent difficulties stem from the conditions rather than a shift in mindset. He highlighted Rohit’s team-oriented mentality, stating that the captain prioritizes the team’s success over individual performance.
Despite the recent challenges, Rohit Sharma’s overall ODI statistics remain impressive. Earlier in the season, he scored a century against Australia in Sydney and has accumulated three fifties in his last eight ODI innings. Additionally, he returned to domestic cricket, playing for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he showcased his talent with a commanding score of 155, further demonstrating his capability as a top-order batsman.
