Mumbai’s Siddhesh Lad Advocates for Day/Night Format in Vijay Hazare Trophy Knockouts

Mumbai’s stand-in captain, Siddhesh Lad, has voiced concerns over the early 9 AM start times for knockout matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Following Mumbai’s 55-run defeat to Karnataka in the quarterfinals, Lad emphasized that such scheduling favors teams bowling first, making the toss a critical factor in the outcome. He proposed that future knockout matches be held in a day-night format to create more balanced playing conditions for both teams.

Match Overview

In the quarterfinal clash held at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, Mumbai faced a challenging situation after being asked to bat first by Karnataka, who won the toss. The team struggled early, finding themselves at 60 for four within the first 18 overs. However, a resilient half-century from Shams Mulani, who scored 86 runs off 91 balls, helped stabilize the innings. Support came from Siddhesh Lad, who contributed 38 runs off 58 balls, and Sairaj Patil, who added 33 runs off 25 balls. Ultimately, Mumbai managed to post a total of 254 runs for eight wickets in their allotted 50 overs.

Karnataka’s response was strong, as they reached 187 for one in just 33 overs before rain and bad light halted play. Devdutt Padikkal remained unbeaten on 81 runs from 95 balls, while Karun Nair supported him with 74 runs off 80 balls. The match was significantly influenced by the conditions, which Lad argued were skewed against the team batting first.

Concerns Over Early Start Times

Lad’s criticism of the 9 AM start time centers on the adverse conditions faced by teams batting first. He noted that the ball was seaming for a considerable portion of their innings, making it difficult for young batsmen to perform. “It doesn’t make sense to start the quarterfinal matches of VHT at 9 AM,” Lad stated, highlighting the challenges posed by the pitch conditions, which had a generous grass cover. He argued that early wickets can severely hinder a team’s ability to recover and post a competitive score.

Lad called for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to reconsider the scheduling of knockout matches. He suggested that moving to a day-night format would level the playing field, allowing teams batting first to have a fair chance. “I can understand that you can’t play day/night matches during the league stage, but it should be possible in the knockout rounds,” he emphasized.

Support from Former Players

Lad’s sentiments were echoed by former India batsman Mandeep Singh, who also criticized the early start times. Mandeep pointed out that the conditions during the first innings often favor the bowling side, making it challenging for batsmen. He recalled experiences from previous seasons where matches played at different venues had similar issues, with teams batting second consistently winning due to favorable conditions.

Mandeep referenced specific instances from the 2022-23 season, where matches at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad saw the team batting second emerge victorious on all occasions. He expressed hope that the current tournament would not follow the same pattern, advocating for a more equitable setup for both teams.

Looking Ahead

While acknowledging the challenges faced during the match, Lad also mentioned that Mumbai’s squad was missing key players like Sarfaraz Khan and Tushar Deshpande, which impacted their performance. He noted that the pace attack was inexperienced and that dropped catches further compounded their difficulties. Despite these setbacks, Lad remained focused on the broader issue of match scheduling, insisting that the early start times need to be addressed for future tournaments.

Lad concluded by reiterating that the early start times have been a long-standing issue in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He stressed that it is not merely about one team’s defeat but a matter that requires attention for the integrity of the competition moving forward.
