Bangladesh Alleges ICC Raised Security Concerns for Mustafizur Rahman in India, ICC Denies Claims as ‘Complete Lie’

Bangladesh’s sports advisor, Asif Nazrul, announced on Monday that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has recognized the country’s security concerns regarding travel to India for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The tournament is set to commence on February 7, but Bangladesh has requested a shift of its matches to co-host Sri Lanka due to these concerns. This request follows the release of pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) amid unspecified developments cited by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Bangladesh’s Security Concerns

Asif Nazrul highlighted specific security threats that have prompted Bangladesh’s apprehensions. During a press conference in Dhaka, he revealed that the ICC’s security team communicated three key factors that could heighten risks for the Bangladesh team. First, the inclusion of Mustafizur Rahman in the squad could pose a security challenge. Second, the presence of Bangladeshi supporters wearing national jerseys could also increase the threat level. Lastly, Nazrul noted that the upcoming elections in Bangladesh could further exacerbate security issues. These factors have led the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to formally request a relocation of their matches to Sri Lanka.

ICC’s Response

In response to Nazrul’s claims, the ICC confirmed that it has been in contact with the BCB regarding security matters in India. However, the ICC refuted Nazrul’s assertions, stating that his interpretation of their communication is inaccurate. An ICC source emphasized that there was no mention of Mustafizur’s selection being a security concern in their correspondence. The ICC’s statement categorically dismissed Nazrul’s claims as falsehoods, asserting that the organization has not issued any advisory that aligns with his statements.

Impact of Mustafizur’s IPL Exit

The situation surrounding Mustafizur Rahman’s release from KKR has intensified the BCB’s concerns. His exit from the IPL came amid reports of attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, raising alarms about the safety of players and fans alike. Following this incident, the Bangladesh government took the step of banning the broadcast of the Indian Premier League in the country. As it stands, Bangladesh is scheduled to play its first three group matches in Kolkata, followed by a final group game in Mumbai. The BCB’s request to move matches to Sri Lanka reflects a growing emphasis on player safety and security in light of recent events.

Upcoming T20 World Cup Schedule

The T20 World Cup is slated to take place from February 7 to March 8, with matches hosted across various venues in India and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh’s initial matches are crucial for the team’s prospects in the tournament. The BCB’s ongoing discussions with the ICC will be pivotal in determining whether their request for a venue change will be granted. As the tournament approaches, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of players and fans, while also navigating the complexities of international cricket amidst security concerns.
