Karnataka Advances to Fourth Consecutive Semifinal After Defeating Mumbai in Vijay Hazare Trophy
Defending champions Karnataka secured their place in the semifinals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy for the fourth consecutive season after defeating Mumbai by 55 runs using the VJD method. The match, held at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground in Bengaluru, saw Karnataka set a target of 255 runs. When rain interrupted play, Karnataka was comfortably positioned at 187 for 1 in 33 overs, well above the VJD par score of 132. Key contributions came from Devdutt Padikkal, who remained unbeaten on 81, and Karun Nair, who scored 74 not out.
Mumbai’s Struggles with the Bat
Mumbai faced significant challenges during their innings, managing to score only 254 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. After Karnataka’s captain, Mayank Agarwal, opted to bowl first, Mumbai quickly found themselves in trouble, slipping to 60 for 4 within 17.2 overs. Shams Mulani emerged as a standout performer for Mumbai, scoring 86 runs off 91 balls and hitting eight boundaries. He formed a crucial partnership of 76 runs for the sixth wicket with captain Siddhesh Lad, who contributed 38 runs from 58 balls. Despite losing wickets in quick succession, Mulani’s efforts, along with Sairaj Patil’s late innings contribution of 33 not out, helped Mumbai add 59 runs in the final five overs. Mulani was eventually dismissed lbw by Abhilash Shetty in the last over.
Karnataka’s Bowling Prowess
Karnataka’s bowlers delivered a disciplined performance, with Vidyadhar Patil leading the charge by taking three wickets for 42 runs. Abhilash Shetty and Vidwath Kaverappa also made significant contributions, each claiming two wickets. The early breakthroughs set the tone for Karnataka, allowing them to maintain pressure on the Mumbai batting lineup. Despite the absence of pacer Tushar Deshpande due to personal reasons and the late withdrawal of Sarfaraz Khan due to injury, Mumbai struggled to build momentum throughout their innings.
Karnataka’s Solid Chase
In their chase, Karnataka started cautiously but lost their captain, Agarwal, early in the powerplay. He was dismissed for 12 runs off 24 balls after edging a delivery from Mohit Avasthi to slip. However, Padikkal capitalized on two missed chances, first being dropped at deep fine leg and then surviving another slip opportunity. He accelerated the scoring, forming a formidable partnership with Nair, adding 143 runs for the second wicket in 150 balls. Padikkal’s innings included several boundaries, while Nair returned to form with a half-century off 44 balls, marking his third fifty of the tournament. Karnataka’s strong performance continued their impressive run, having topped Elite Group A with six wins from seven matches.
