IND vs NZ 1st ODI: Sanjay Bangar Sparks Controversy by Declaring Hindi the ‘National Language of India’

During the first ODI between India and New Zealand, a commentary incident involving former cricketer Sanjay Bangar ignited controversy. While on the Hindi commentary panel, Bangar referred to Hindi as the “national language of India,” which drew immediate backlash on social media. The match itself saw New Zealand set a formidable target, with Daryl Mitchell scoring 84 runs, leading his team to a total of 300 for 8.

Controversial Commentary Moment

The controversy erupted during the 13th over of the match when Sanjay Bangar made his statement about Hindi. This comment came as India had won the toss and opted to bowl first. Washington Sundar was the bowler at that moment, and wicketkeeper KL Rahul appeared dissatisfied with Sundar’s pace. Former fast bowler Varun Aaron, also on commentary, noted that KL Rahul and Washington Sundar were conversing in Tamil. He humorously questioned whether Sundar understood Tamil better, prompting Bangar to assert his belief in Hindi and label it as the national language. This assertion quickly drew criticism, as many fans pointed out that India does not officially recognize a national language, with Hindi being one of the official languages instead. The incident gained traction on social media, trending during the match as viewers voiced their opinions.

New Zealand’s Strong Performance

Amid the off-field drama, New Zealand showcased a strong batting performance. Daryl Mitchell emerged as a standout player, scoring an aggressive 84 runs. His efforts were crucial in helping New Zealand reach a total of 300 for 8. The innings began positively for New Zealand, with openers Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls forming a solid partnership. Conway contributed 56 runs, while Nicholls added 62, together accumulating 117 runs before Harshit Rana broke their partnership by dismissing Nicholls. Rana’s bowling proved effective, as he followed up by bowling out Conway in the next over.

India’s bowlers managed to strike at regular intervals, with Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, and Prasidh Krishna each taking two wickets. Siraj dismissed Will Young for 12 runs, while Kuldeep Yadav sent Glenn Phillips back to the pavilion for just 12 runs. Prasidh Krishna also contributed by bowling Mitchell Hay for 18 runs. Despite the wickets falling, Mitchell remained composed and played a steady innings until he was run out due to a direct hit from Shreyas Iyer. Debutant Kristian Clarke finished the innings unbeaten on 24 runs.

Looking Ahead: T20 Series and World Cup

Following this ODI series, both teams will shift their focus to a five-match T20 series. This series is particularly significant as it serves as preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup, which is set to take place in India and Sri Lanka. The T20 matches will provide both teams with an opportunity to fine-tune their strategies and player combinations ahead of the prestigious tournament. With the ODI series already stirring discussions both on and off the field, fans are eager to see how the teams will adapt and perform in the shorter format of the game. The excitement surrounding the T20 World Cup is palpable, and both teams will be looking to build momentum in the lead-up to the event.
