How Pat Cummins Helped Ashok Sharma Reach 150 kph: An Exclusive Look at His Journey

NEW DELHI: Ashok Sharma, a promising 23-year-old pacer from Rajasthan, has made headlines after being acquired by the Gujarat Titans for ₹90 lakh during the IPL 2026 auction in Abu Dhabi. Known for his raw speed, Ashok shattered an 11-year-old record in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, finishing as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 22 wickets. His head coach, Anshu Jain, has praised his development, noting that Ashok’s pace is now complemented by improved accuracy.

Ashok Sharma’s journey into fast bowling began in his childhood, inspired by his elder brother, Akshay Sharma. Growing up in Rampur, near Jaipur, Ashok was naturally quick and always had a passion for the sport. He credits Akshay for teaching him the fundamentals of fast bowling and for encouraging him to pursue cricket despite their family’s farming background. Their father, Nathulal, faced a tough decision about whether to prioritize education or allow his sons to chase their cricketing dreams. Akshay made the ultimate sacrifice, stepping back from his own aspirations to support Ashok’s ambitions.

Ashok’s talent caught the attention of Vivek Yadav, a former Ranji Trophy cricketer, who became a significant mentor in his life. Yadav recognized Ashok’s potential and took him under his wing, helping him refine his skills. However, the loss of Yadav during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021 was a devastating blow for Ashok. He recalls feeling as if his career had come to an end, as Yadav had always believed in his ability to play for India.

Rise to Prominence

Despite the challenges, Ashok’s talent did not go unnoticed. Anshu Jain, who was coaching the Jaipur district team, selected him for an inter-district tournament, advocating for his inclusion despite some resistance from selectors. Jain recognized Ashok’s potential, describing him as an “X-factor” due to his speed. Over the years, Ashok has worked diligently on his bowling technique, particularly focusing on his line and length. His hard work paid off during the Ranji Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he garnered praise for his performances.

Ashok’s journey in the IPL began in 2022 when he was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders for ₹55 lakh. Although he faced ups and downs, including being released and later serving as a net bowler for Rajasthan Royals, he remained focused on improving his game. His time with KKR allowed him to learn from seasoned players like Pat Cummins, who advised him on maintaining his pace and honing his skills.

Future Aspirations

As Ashok continues to impress with his bowling speed, clocking up to 150 kph, he remains grounded and focused on his goals. He acknowledges the importance of his late mentor, Vivek Yadav, in shaping his career and feels a sense of responsibility to honor his legacy. Ashok regularly communicates with Yadav’s family, ensuring that his mentor’s memory lives on in his journey.

Looking ahead, Ashok aspires to meet his idol, Dale Steyn, whom he admires greatly. He recalls a brief encounter with Steyn during his time with KKR, expressing how meaningful it was to meet someone he had looked up to for so long. With the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy showcasing his talent, Ashok Sharma is poised for a bright future in cricket. If he maintains his current form, the possibility of representing India may soon become a reality.
