Circle to Search Enhances Scam Detection with New Google Android Features

Google has unveiled a series of new features for Android that will be rolled out to users in the coming weeks. This update includes enhancements that work across various devices, exclusive features for Pixel phones running Android 16, and significant accessibility improvements. A standout addition is the upgraded Circle to Search tool, which now assists users in identifying potential scams on their screens, aiming to enhance user safety and streamline the verification process.
Circle to Search Gets Scam Detection Tool
Google has enhanced its Circle to Search feature, enabling users to verify suspicious messages or prompts more effectively. By circling the content in question, users can access an AI Overview that provides insights into potential scam patterns and offers safety tips. This improvement aims to minimize the need for users to switch between apps while investigating the source of unknown messages.
In addition to this feature, Google is introducing new safety tools across various communication applications. The Phone app now includes a Call Reason feature, allowing users to tag calls as “urgent.” This tag will be visible to the recipient during the call and in their call history if they miss it. Furthermore, Google Messages has added functionality that allows users to leave and report group chats initiated by unknown numbers. When a group invite is received, Android will display an alert containing group details and safety recommendations, enabling users to exit, block, or report the chat with a single tap.
Google is also rolling out general updates, including support for pinned tabs in Chrome, which allows users to keep important pages fixed at the top of their browser. The Emoji Kitchen feature is expanding its sticker options for the holiday season, and Expressive Captions on supported devices will now include new emotion tags such as [joy] and [sadness].
Android 16 Features for Pixel Devices
Users of Google Pixel devices will benefit from additional features introduced in Android 16. Notifications will now utilize AI to summarize messages and group alerts based on relevance, helping users manage their notifications more effectively. The updated notification organizer can silence low-priority alerts, reducing interruptions. Improvements to parental controls will provide families with enhanced options for managing screen time and app activity on children’s devices, including PIN-based access for added security.
The December update will also introduce a Connected Displays feature, currently in beta, which allows Pixel phones to extend their screens to external displays. Users will gain access to new customization tools, such as custom icon shapes and automatic themed icons across applications. Additionally, the improved Dark theme will now function on apps that do not have built-in dark mode support, helping to conserve battery life.
Accessibility Improvements
Google is making strides in accessibility with the introduction of Fast Pair for Bluetooth LE hearing aids, starting with Demant devices and later expanding to Starkey models. Voice Access can now be activated with a spoken prompt to Gemini, and TalkBack users can initiate dictation in Gboard using a two-finger double-tap. Interactions with the mouse on Android devices have also been simplified.
Moreover, Expressive Captions will be available on YouTube videos uploaded in English after October. Pixel users will benefit from a new feature called Guided Frame, which employs Gemini models to describe what is visible in the camera view, further enhancing the accessibility of the platform for users with visual impairments.
