Ex-India Captain Launches Fiery Critique of Head Coach, Dismissing Gautam Gambhir’s Comments

Former Indian captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth has sharply criticized head coach Gautam Gambhir following India’s struggles in the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati. With South Africa leading the series 1-0 after their victory in Kolkata, Srikkanth expressed his concerns about the team’s selection policy during a recent episode of his YouTube show, “Cheeky Cheeka.” He specifically questioned the decision to leave out Axar Patel and highlighted the team’s inconsistent performance on a pitch that was expected to favor them.

Srikkanth’s Critique of Selection Decisions

Srikkanth’s latest comments come amid ongoing tensions between him and Gambhir. He began by questioning the rationale behind Axar Patel’s omission from the playing XI, asking if the all-rounder was injured or if the team management was simply experimenting with player selections. Srikkanth emphasized the need for stability in the squad, criticizing what he described as a “trial and error” approach under Gambhir’s leadership. He stated, “Gautam Gambhir can say whatever he wants — I don’t care. I’ve been a captain and a chairman of selectors. I know what I’m talking about.”

The former chief selector also pointed out the team’s poor performance on a pitch that had been labeled as a “road” by Indian players. He noted how South African bowlers Simon Harmer, Keshav Maharaj, and Marco Jansen capitalized on the conditions, while Indian batters struggled to adapt. Srikkanth’s remarks reflect a growing frustration with the team’s management and selection strategies.

Analysis of India’s Performance

In his critique, Srikkanth highlighted specific moments from the match that showcased India’s batting failures. He noted that despite Kuldeep Yadav’s earlier comments about the pitch being lifeless, Indian batters were dismissed by Harmer and Maharaj’s deliveries, as well as Jansen’s bouncers. He expressed disbelief at the number of wickets lost to short balls on a surface that was expected to be easy for batting. Srikkanth praised Harmer’s classic off-spin technique, contrasting it with the flat deliveries from India’s spinners.

The criticism extended to Rishabh Pant, whose aggressive shot selection drew Srikkanth’s ire. He questioned Pant’s decision-making as captain, suggesting that he should have better understood the match situation. Srikkanth’s analysis underscores the need for a more disciplined approach from the Indian batting unit, especially in challenging conditions.

Pressure on Team Management

As South Africa maintains a commanding position in the Test match, the scrutiny on India’s management continues to intensify. Srikkanth’s comments serve as a reminder of the expectations placed on the team, particularly after their recent performances. He acknowledged that while India might still salvage a draw from the match, the underlying issues with selection and consistency remain critical concerns. “Wrong policies,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of stability in the team’s approach moving forward. With the series on the line, the pressure on Gambhir and the selectors is palpable as they seek to turn the tide in the remaining matches.
