Rohit Sharma’s Participation in Vijay Hazare Trophy Remains Uncertain, Says Mumbai Chief Selector

Mumbai’s chief selector, Sanjay Patil, has confirmed that he has not yet received any communication from Rohit Sharma regarding his availability for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy. Despite this, Patil expressed optimism about Sharma’s potential participation, highlighting the positive impact it would have on younger players. Meanwhile, Sharma’s recent training session at the MCA-BKC ground suggests he is eager to engage in competitive cricket. The Vijay Hazare Trophy is set to take place from December 24, 2025, to January 8, 2026, with Mumbai placed in Elite Group C.

Rohit Sharma’s involvement in the Vijay Hazare Trophy remains uncertain as he has not officially communicated his plans to the Mumbai cricket authorities. Sanjay Patil, the chief selector, noted that while he appreciates the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) encouraging players to participate in domestic cricket, he has yet to hear from Sharma. The BCCI’s directive mandates that all Indian players must play in domestic competitions when not on national duty or injured. This policy led to both Sharma and Virat Kohli participating in the Ranji Trophy earlier this year. However, with Sharma primarily focused on the ODI format for India, his participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy would be a significant boost for the Mumbai team.

Mumbai’s Group Stage Matches

The Vijay Hazare Trophy’s group stage will run from December 24, 2025, to January 8, 2026. Mumbai has been assigned to Elite Group C, where they will compete against teams such as Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, and Goa. All matches will be held in Jaipur. Prior to the tournament, Mumbai will also face South Africa in a three-match ODI series from December 3-9, followed by another series against New Zealand starting January 11. The upcoming matches will be crucial for Mumbai as they aim to secure a strong position in the tournament.

Key Player Updates for Mumbai

In a positive development for the Mumbai team, off-spinner Tanush Kotian and seamer Mohit Awasthi are set to return for their upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Pondicherry at the Wankhede Stadium on November 16. Kotian has been absent from the last two matches due to his participation with India A against South Africa A, where he performed impressively, taking eight wickets in two matches. Awasthi, who has been sidelined due to injury, last played for Mumbai in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy semifinal. His return adds depth to the bowling lineup, as he has taken 99 wickets in 31 first-class matches. Meanwhile, Himanshu Singh and Irfan Umair have been excluded from the squad, making way for the returning players.
