iPhone Users Can Now Control Samsung Routines with Siri

Samsung has made a significant advancement in smart home technology by enabling iPhone and Apple Watch users to control their Samsung-powered devices using Siri. This new feature allows for seamless integration between Apple’s voice assistant and Samsung’s SmartThings platform, making it easier for households that use both ecosystems. With this update, users can create Siri Shortcuts to trigger various SmartThings routines, enhancing the convenience of managing smart home devices.

Siri Can Now Run SmartThings Routines

The latest update allows iPhone users to create Siri Shortcuts that can instantly activate SmartThings automations. This means that actions which previously required the SmartThings app or a Galaxy device can now be initiated with simple voice commands. For instance, users can say, “Hey Siri, I’m leaving,” to trigger a routine that locks doors and turns off lights. Other examples include a “Good Morning” routine that brightens lights and starts the coffee maker, and a “Bedtime” routine that dims lights and sets the thermostat for sleep. This integration not only enhances user experience but also bridges a significant gap for Apple users living in SmartThings-equipped homes.

Apple Watch Integration Gets a Major Boost

The update also significantly enhances the functionality of SmartThings on the Apple Watch. Users can now view all SmartThings device groups directly on their wrist, allowing for quick access and control. This means that users can trigger routines and manage devices without needing to reach for their phones. The improved Apple Watch integration brings its capabilities closer to those available to Samsung Watch users, making it a valuable upgrade for households that utilize both Apple and Samsung devices.

Live Activities for More Smart Devices

In addition to the Siri integration, Samsung has expanded its Live Activities feature on iOS. iPhone users can now receive real-time status updates for up to five recently used SmartThings devices, such as robot vacuums and air purifiers. These updates appear on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island, providing quicker access to device information. This enhancement allows users to stay informed about their smart home devices without needing to open the SmartThings app.

What This Means for the Smart Home

Historically, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings operated within their own ecosystems, creating challenges for users with mixed-device households. While standards like Matter and Thread have begun to reduce these barriers, Samsung’s latest update takes a significant step by directly linking its smart home system with Apple’s native assistant. For iPhone users with SmartThings at home, this means they can now effortlessly control their Samsung-powered smart home using Siri, streamlining the smart home experience and enhancing overall convenience.
