India and New Zealand Conclude Fourth Round of FTA Negotiations with Optimism for Early, Balanced Agreement

The fourth round of negotiations for the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has concluded successfully in Auckland and Rotorua, marking a significant step towards enhancing bilateral economic cooperation. Over five days, both nations engaged in detailed discussions, reaffirming their commitment to a balanced and comprehensive trade pact. Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and New Zealand’s Minister for Trade Todd McClay expressed optimism about the progress made, aiming for a modern agreement that will expand trade flows and deepen investment linkages.

Progress in Negotiations

The recent negotiations focused on various key areas, including trade in goods and services, economic and technical cooperation, investment, and rules of origin. Both delegations acknowledged the steady progress achieved during this round of talks. Guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India reiterated its goal of strengthening global supply chains and fostering deeper economic partnerships that promote inclusive and sustainable growth. The proposed FTA is expected to unlock potential in several sectors, including agriculture, food processing, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, education, and services.

Economic Impact and Trade Statistics

India’s bilateral merchandise trade with New Zealand reached $1.3 billion in the fiscal year 2024-25, reflecting a remarkable 49% increase year-on-year. The FTA aims to further enhance trade flows and improve market access for businesses in both countries. Goyal emphasized the importance of this agreement in building stronger economic ties, highlighting the potential benefits for both nations. The ministers noted that the pact would not only deepen investment linkages but also create opportunities for businesses to thrive in a more integrated market.

Future Steps and Areas of Cooperation

While no specific timeline has been established for the conclusion of the FTA, officials anticipate that it could be finalized early next year. McClay is expected to visit India next month to continue discussions. During the negotiations, both sides explored cooperation in new areas such as tourism, technology, space, sports, and education. Dairy remains a sensitive topic, but negotiators have made progress in narrowing their differences. The ongoing discussions reflect a commitment to fostering a mutually beneficial relationship between India and New Zealand.

Strengthening Cultural and Economic Ties

During his visit, Goyal met with business leaders from both countries, underscoring the strong cultural and economic ties that exist between India and New Zealand. He expressed a desire to work towards a balanced and comprehensive agreement that aligns with the growing strategic and economic convergence between the two nations. The optimism surrounding the FTA reflects a shared vision for a prosperous future, with both countries looking forward to the benefits that a successful agreement would bring.
