ICC Takes Action in Asia Cup Controversy: Complete List of Sanctioned and Warned Players

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced disciplinary measures against several players from India and Pakistan following intense matches during the ICC Asia Cup 2025. The hearings, conducted by the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, addressed incidents from the India-Pakistan encounters held on September 14, 21, and 28. Key players involved include Suryakumar Yadav, Haris Rauf, and Jasprit Bumrah, with various penalties imposed for breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Disciplinary Actions from September 14 Match

In the first match on September 14, Suryakumar Yadav from India and Haris Rauf along with Sahibzada Farhan from Pakistan were found guilty of violating Article 2.21 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to conduct that brings the game into disrepute. As a result, Suryakumar and Rauf were each fined 30% of their match fees and received two demerit points. Sahibzada Farhan received an official warning and one demerit point. These penalties reflect the ICC’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the game and ensuring that players adhere to the expected standards of conduct.

Subsequent Incidents and Hearings

A week later, during the match on September 21, Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh faced charges under Article 2.6 for allegedly making an offensive gesture. However, after a thorough hearing led by Match Referee Andy Pycroft, he was found not guilty, and no sanctions were imposed. This decision highlights the importance of due process in disciplinary matters, ensuring that players are treated fairly and justly.

The Asia Cup final on September 28 saw further disciplinary actions. Jasprit Bumrah accepted a charge under Article 2.21 for conduct that brought the game into disrepute, resulting in an official warning and one demerit point. Since he admitted to the offense, no formal hearing was necessary. In contrast, Haris Rauf faced penalties again for similar conduct, leading to a fine of 30% of his match fee and two additional demerit points, bringing his total to four demerit points within a two-year period.

Consequences of Accumulated Demerit Points

The accumulation of four or more demerit points within a two-year timeframe triggers an automatic suspension under ICC rules. As a result, Haris Rauf will miss Pakistan’s One Day Internationals against South Africa scheduled for November 4 and 6, 2025. This situation underscores the ICC’s strict enforcement of its Code of Conduct, which aims to uphold the sport’s integrity. Level 1 breaches can incur fines of up to 50% of a player’s match fee and up to two demerit points, emphasizing the importance of maintaining discipline on the field.

The disciplinary actions taken during the Asia Cup 2025 serve as a reminder of the ICC’s commitment to ensuring fair play and sportsmanship in cricket. Players are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the values of the game, and the ICC will continue to enforce its regulations to uphold these standards.
