Stock Market Closure on Bali Pratipada: Are NSE and BSE Trading Sessions Suspended Today?
Diwali celebrations may have concluded, but the festive spirit continues to resonate across India. As the nation observes various holidays, many are curious about the status of the stock markets on October 22. Both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain closed today in observance of Balipratipada, a significant day in the Diwali festivities. Trading will resume on October 23, allowing investors to return to the markets after the holiday.
Stock Market Closure on Balipratipada
On October 22, the NSE and BSE will not conduct any trading activities due to the celebration of Balipratipada. This holiday is recognized on the fourth day of Diwali and is observed as a day of renewal and prosperity. According to the official websites of both exchanges, all trading segments, including equities, derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB), will be completely shut down for the day. Investors looking to engage in trading will need to wait until October 23, when regular market operations will resume.
Future Market Holidays
Looking ahead, the NSE and BSE will observe additional holidays in the coming months. Besides the regular weekend breaks, both exchanges will close on November 5 for Prakash Gurpurb, honoring the birth of Sri Guru Nanak Dev, and on December 25 for Christmas. These closures are part of the exchanges’ annual holiday calendar, which is designed to accommodate significant cultural and religious observances across the country.
Commodity Markets Also Closed
In addition to the stock exchanges, commodity markets will also be inactive on October 22. The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) and the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will not operate today, aligning with the observance of Balipratipada. This day is particularly important in regions like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, where it marks the traditional New Year according to the Vikram Samvat calendar. The closure of these markets reflects the broader cultural significance of the holiday.
Highlights from Recent Muhurat Trading
Prior to the holiday, a special Muhurat trading session took place, marking the beginning of the new financial year, Samvat 2082. This session, held on October 21, saw the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty close with slight gains, indicating a positive start to the new year. The NSE Nifty increased by 25.45 points, or 0.10%, finishing at 25,868.60, while the BSE Sensex rose by 62.97 points, or 0.07%, closing at 84,426.34. This session is traditionally viewed as an auspicious time for investors, and the gains reflect a favorable outlook amid strong global market cues.
