Passenger Vehicle Sales Surge During Navratri as GST 2.0 Boosts Festive Demand

Passenger vehicle sales in India surged by 35% year-on-year during the recent nine-day Navratri festival, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). This remarkable increase reflects a broader trend, with overall vehicle registrations rising by 6% in September. The spike in sales followed a period of muted activity as consumers awaited the implementation of new Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates, which took effect on September 22. The festive season, combined with the revised tax structure, has significantly boosted consumer sentiment and vehicle deliveries.
Sales Performance During Navratri
During the Navratri period, passenger vehicle sales reached 217,744 units, a notable increase from 161,443 units recorded in the same timeframe last year. For the entire month of September, passenger vehicle sales totaled 299,369 units, marking a 6% rise from 282,945 units in September 2024. FADA Vice President Sai Giridhar noted that the first three weeks of September were relatively quiet as customers postponed purchases in anticipation of lower GST rates. However, the festive spirit of Navratri, coupled with the new tax benefits, revitalized consumer interest and accelerated vehicle deliveries across various categories.
Dealerships experienced an unprecedented influx of customers during the festive season. FADA highlighted that while the revised GST rates and festive demand led to increased inquiries and bookings, limited billing days hindered the full recovery potential of the market. The organization remains optimistic about continued momentum through the upcoming Deepawali celebrations, suggesting a robust conclusion to the 42-day festive season.
Segment-wise Sales Analysis
In September 2025, the performance of different vehicle segments varied significantly. Two-wheeler sales reached 1,287,735 units, reflecting a 7% increase year-on-year, with Navratri sales soaring by 36% to 835,364 units. Conversely, three-wheeler sales declined by 7% to 98,866 units, although sales during Navratri rose by 25% to 46,204 units. Commercial vehicle sales increased by 3% to 72,124 units, with Navratri sales up 15% to 33,856 units. Tractor sales also saw growth, rising by 4% to 64,785 units, with a 19% increase during Navratri to 21,604 units.
Overall, retail sales across all segments reached 1,827,337 units, a 5% increase from 1,736,760 units last year. The Navratri sales across all segments surged by 34% to 1,156,935 units. This diverse performance underscores the varying consumer preferences and market dynamics within the automotive sector.
Factors Driving the Surge in Sales
FADA attributed the surge in vehicle sales to several key factors. The reduction in GST rates, combined with festive offers, post-monsoon income gains, and accessible financing options, has enhanced affordability for consumers. This has attracted both first-time buyers and existing customers looking for premium variants. The positive sales trend was evident in both rural and urban markets, indicating a broad-based recovery in consumer demand.
Representing over 15,000 dealerships and 30,000 outlets nationwide, FADA expressed optimism for the upcoming festive auto retail season. The organization believes that if logistics and transport systems operate efficiently, India could experience its best-ever festive auto retail season. The outlook for October remains bright, bolstered by economic resilience, festive enthusiasm, and the transformative impact of GST 2.0 on the automotive market.
