Day 1 Highlights: Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah Dominate as KL Rahul Hits Fifty in IND vs WI 1st Test
IND vs WI 1st Test, India showcased a dominant performance on the opening day of the first Test against West Indies, taking control with a stellar bowling display led by Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah. The visitors were bowled out for a mere 162 runs, while India ended the day at 121 for 2, trailing by 41 runs with eight wickets still in hand. KL Rahul’s composed half-century was pivotal in setting the tone for the hosts as they aimed for a significant first-innings lead.
SIRAJ AND BUMRAH’S BOWLING MASTERCLASS
The day began with West Indies opting to bat first, a decision that quickly backfired. Mohammed Siraj was the standout bowler, claiming four wickets for 40 runs. He made an immediate impact, striking three times in a fiery opening spell and adding another wicket after lunch. Jasprit Bumrah supported him effectively, taking three wickets for 32 runs, as he expertly dismantled the West Indies middle order. The Caribbean side struggled to find any momentum throughout their innings. Justin Greaves top-scored with 32 runs, while Shai Hope and Roston Chase contributed 26 and 24 runs, respectively. However, none of the batsmen could build a substantial innings. Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar also played crucial roles, with Yadav taking two wickets for 25 runs and Sundar adding one for just nine runs. The West Indies were bundled out in just 44.1 overs, leaving India in a commanding position.
RAHUL STANDS FIRM
In response, Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul provided a steady start. Jaiswal initially adopted a cautious approach, scoring just four runs off his first 36 balls before finding his rhythm. He eventually reached 36 runs off 54 balls but fell to a cut shot that edged behind off Jayden Seales. Sai Sudharsan’s innings was brief; after narrowly avoiding a run-out with Rahul, he misjudged a pull shot against Roston Chase and was trapped lbw for just seven runs. Meanwhile, KL Rahul remained composed throughout his innings, battling through early movement from the new ball. He reached his 20th Test fifty, finishing the day unbeaten on 53 runs off 114 deliveries, including six boundaries. Skipper Shubman Gill provided solid support, ending the day not out on 18 runs as India maintained their grip on the match.
INDIA ON TOP
With only 41 runs separating them from the West Indies’ total and eight wickets still in hand, India is well-positioned to take a significant first-innings lead on Day 2. If Rahul and Gill can extend their partnership and the middle order performs well, the hosts will aim to bat the West Indies out of the contest early in this two-Test series. The West Indies bowlers showed some promise, particularly Seales, who troubled the Indian top order with bounce and movement. However, debutant Johann Layne struggled with his line and length, which eased the pressure on the Indian batters. As the match progresses, all eyes will be on whether India can capitalize on their strong position and build a commanding lead.
