Aditya Narayan Reveals Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Original Choice for Gangubai: Rani Mukerji Before Alia Bhatt

Singer and television host Aditya Narayan recently revealed an intriguing detail about the early stages of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s acclaimed film Gangubai Kathiawadi. In a conversation with Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa on their YouTube channel, Narayan disclosed that Rani Mukerji was initially considered for the lead role before Alia Bhatt ultimately took on the part. This revelation sheds light on the film’s development process and highlights the shifting dynamics in Bollywood casting.

Aditya Narayan’s Journey with Bhansali

Aditya Narayan, who once served as an assistant director to Sanjay Leela Bhansali, shared insights into his career trajectory during the conversation. After facing a challenging period marked by the commercial failure of his film *Shaapit*, Narayan struggled to secure work and found himself out of the limelight for nearly a year. During this time, he experienced a significant decline in support from public relations professionals and lost out on previous project offers.

His fortunes began to change when he landed a hosting role on *X Factor India*, where Bhansali was a judge. Encouraged by singer Sonu Nigam, Narayan expressed his desire to learn filmmaking and approached Bhansali for an assistant director position. Initially, Bhansali did not take him seriously, as Narayan recalled, “He didn’t give me any work the first week—probably thought I’d quit.” However, as time passed, Bhansali involved him in the creative process, allowing Narayan to contribute to the development of two scripts: *Ram-Leela* and *Gangubai Kathiawadi*.

Rani Mukerji’s Initial Casting Consideration

During the discussion, Narayan revealed that Bhansali had once envisioned Rani Mukerji in the lead role of *Gangubai Kathiawadi*. This casting consideration came before the project evolved into what it is today. Narayan mentioned that Bhansali sought feedback from his team on both scripts, and he personally preferred *Ram-Leela*. Ultimately, the project took a different direction, and years later, Alia Bhatt was cast in the titular role, which would go on to become a defining moment in her career.

The film, which was released in 2022, received widespread acclaim and commercial success. It is based on a chapter from Hussain Zaidi’s book *Mafia Queens of Mumbai*, chronicling the life of Gangubai, a woman who rose from adversity to become a powerful figure in Mumbai’s Kamathipura district. Alia Bhatt’s performance was particularly praised, earning her the National Award for Best Actress at the 69th National Film Awards.

Box Office Success and Future Projects

*Gangubai Kathiawadi* not only garnered critical acclaim but also achieved impressive box office success, grossing Rs. 211.5 crores worldwide. The film featured a talented ensemble cast, including Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Jim Sarbh, Seema Pahwa, and Ajay Devgn. As of now, Aditya Narayan is appearing on the reality show *Rise & Fall*, hosted by Ashneer Grover, while Sanjay Leela Bhansali is busy working on his next film, *Love & War*. This upcoming project will star Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, and Vicky Kaushal, with a release date anticipated in 2026.

The evolution of *Gangubai Kathiawadi* serves as a testament to the dynamic nature of film production in Bollywood, where casting decisions can shift dramatically over time, leading to unexpected yet successful outcomes.
