French VC Transitions from YouTube Content Creator to $12M Fundraiser for Y Combinator Startups

Venture capital is often characterized by investors claiming to have insider knowledge of the next big startup. However, Gabriel Jarrosson, a French engineer turned YouTuber and investor, has taken a unique approach by exclusively investing in companies that have gone through Y Combinator (YC). His firm, Lobster Capital, has successfully managed over $12 million in assets and is preparing to launch a larger second fund. Jarrosson’s strategy is rooted in the belief that YC’s proven track record of nurturing billion-dollar companies far outweighs the risks associated with investing in startups outside of this prestigious accelerator.

From YouTube to Venture Capital

In 2017, Gabriel Jarrosson found himself frustrated by the lack of access to promising startups in France. To address this, he launched a YouTube channel aimed at sharing his investment journey in French. The channel quickly gained traction, evolving into one of Europe’s largest angel syndicates. Since 2020, Jarrosson has deployed $36 million into various startups, primarily those that are alumni of Y Combinator. This successful track record laid the groundwork for Lobster Capital, which closed its first fund at $12 million, exceeding its initial target of $8 million. Jarrosson’s disciplined focus on YC companies stems from statistical evidence suggesting that approximately 4.5% of YC startups become unicorns, compared to just 2.5% of other venture-backed seed-stage startups. Additionally, around 45% of YC companies successfully raise a Series A round, surpassing the average of 33%.

Investing in the Future

Jarrosson’s investment philosophy is heavily influenced by the potential for high returns. He emphasizes the importance of evaluating whether a company has the potential to become the next unicorn. In an interview, he stated, “If the answer is yes, it’s often okay to invest even at a slightly higher valuation.” This willingness to invest at elevated valuations—sometimes as high as $40 million for seed rounds—reflects his confidence in the long-term success of YC-backed companies. Despite the premium associated with these deals, Jarrosson remains undeterred, believing that the potential outcomes justify the investment.

Lobster Capital has also capitalized on the recent surge in AI-focused startups emerging from Y Combinator. Jarrosson noted that several cohorts have achieved remarkable revenue growth, with some companies reaching millions in annual recurring revenue (ARR) within just a few months. While he acknowledges concerns about the sustainability of this growth, he maintains that early revenue is a critical milestone for startups, and many can improve customer retention over time.

Building a Reputation and Network

One of the key challenges for investors like Jarrosson is gaining access to top-tier startups, especially as YC demo days attract numerous funds vying for the same opportunities. Jarrosson attributes his competitive edge to his established reputation within the YC network, bolstered by his content creation efforts. He actively engages with YC founders through his podcast and maintains a strong presence on LinkedIn, where he shares insights about his investment journey. This visibility not only enhances his credibility but also helps him secure allocations in sought-after deals.

Jarrosson’s approach aligns with a growing trend among investors who leverage personal branding to attract limited partners. He cites successful figures like Harry Stebbings and Garry Tan as inspirations for his strategy. By treating social media and content creation as essential tools for community building and deal sourcing, Jarrosson has successfully attracted interest from potential investors, often before they even review a fund deck.

A Focus on YC Success

Through Lobster Capital’s first fund, launched in 2023, Jarrosson has made over 100 investments, backing nearly 30 startups across various sectors, including B2B SaaS, fintech, and AI tools. His portfolio includes two unicorns and several “soonicorns,” such as Jeeves, Baubap, and Flutterflow. Jarrosson firmly believes in the value of investing in YC-backed companies, stating, “YC has the track record. It’s been around for more than 20 years now. We know it backs the best founders and creates the best founders.” He remains optimistic about the future performance of YC companies, asserting that even if their results stabilize, they still represent a sound investment opportunity. Investing exclusively in YC-backed firms is not a novel concept, as other venture capital firms have adopted similar strategies, but Jarrosson’s unique approach and personal brand set him apart in the competitive landscape of venture capital.
