Russia Acknowledges India’s Self-Respect Amid US Oil Pressure; Assures No Threat to Bilateral Relations

Russia has expressed strong support for India’s decision to continue purchasing oil from Russia, despite pressure from the United States. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized that India’s relationship with the U.S. should not dictate its ties with Moscow. He praised India’s self-respect and affirmed that there is no threat to the longstanding partnership between India and Russia. Lavrov’s comments came during a press briefing following his address at the UN General Assembly, where he reiterated the importance of India’s independent foreign policy.
India’s Energy Choices Supported by Russia
During his remarks, Lavrov backed Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s firm stance on energy procurement. Jaishankar had previously stated that while India is open to discussing oil sales with the U.S., its decisions regarding imports from Russia and other countries are based on national interests and market conditions. Lavrov described Jaishankar’s comments as a “very worthy response,” highlighting India’s self-respect in maintaining its energy choices. He reiterated that India’s partnerships are solely its own decision, free from external influence.
Lavrov’s statements come at a time when the U.S. has imposed significant tariffs on Indian goods, including a 50% tariff on oil imports from Russia. Despite this, India remains committed to its energy strategy, asserting its right to make independent decisions regarding procurement. The Russian foreign minister emphasized that any discussions regarding trade and investment between India and the U.S. should respect India’s autonomy in its foreign policy.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Lavrov reaffirmed the “particularly privileged strategic partnership” between India and Russia, noting the regular high-level contacts between the two nations. He pointed out that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, further solidifying their relationship. Looking ahead, Putin is expected to visit New Delhi in December, which could enhance cooperation across various sectors.
The two countries have a broad agenda for collaboration, encompassing trade, defense, finance, healthcare, technology, and global coordination through platforms like BRICS and the SCO. Lavrov highlighted the extensive nature of their bilateral cooperation, which includes military and technical collaboration, humanitarian efforts, and advancements in high technology and artificial intelligence. He noted that he frequently engages with Jaishankar to discuss these matters.
Respect for India’s Independent Policy
In response to inquiries about India’s oil purchases, Lavrov reiterated Russia’s respect for India’s independent foreign policy. He acknowledged that India has its own national interests and that the Modi administration is actively promoting these interests on the global stage. Lavrov’s comments reflect a broader understanding of India’s position in the international arena, particularly in light of rising trade tensions with the U.S.
India’s approach to energy imports is driven by practical considerations rather than geopolitical pressures. The Indian government has consistently maintained that its energy procurement decisions are based on market realities and national priorities. As the global energy landscape evolves, India’s commitment to its independent energy policy remains a focal point of its foreign relations, particularly with Russia.
