PM Narendra Modi at WPAC 2025 Opening Ceremony Highlights Achievements of Para Athletes

On a momentous occasion for Indian sports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that hosting the IndianOil New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships (WPAC) will showcase India as a โ€œsporting and inclusiveโ€ nation. The opening ceremony took place at the iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, welcoming approximately 2,200 participants from around 100 countries. PM Modi highlighted the significant role of para athletes in enhancing India’s identity as a burgeoning sports hub, inspiring millions to embrace sports as a lifestyle.

Historic Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony of the WPAC 2025 was a vibrant celebration attended by key dignitaries, including Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, and Chief Minister of Delhi, Srimati Rekha Gupta. The event marked a significant milestone as India became the fourth Asian nation to host the world para athletics championships, following Qatar, UAE, and Japan. New Facilities and Infrastructure

The WPAC 2025 will be the inaugural event on the newly-laid Mondo track at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, which was inaugurated on National Sports Day. Dr. Mandaviya also unveiled a warm-up track and a multi-specialty gymnasium capable of accommodating over 200 athletes simultaneously. These state-of-the-art facilities are designed to enhance the training and performance of para athletes, reflecting India’s commitment to developing sports infrastructure. Dr. Mandaviya noted that this championship is not just about competition but also about building a legacy of accessible venues and support systems for para-athletes.

India’s Ambitious Sporting Goals

The WPAC is part of India’s broader strategy to regularly host global sporting events and demonstrate its capability to organize larger multi-sport championships. Dr. Mandaviya revealed plans for the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and aspirations to host the Olympic Games in 2036. He emphasized that sports foster peace, progress, and wellness, which are essential for the nation’s development. The WPAC is seen as a stepping stone towards achieving these ambitious goals, aiming to inspire the youth and promote equal opportunities in sports.

The WPAC 2025 will feature 186 gold medals up for grabs, with India fielding its largest-ever contingent of 74 para athletes, including notable champions like Sumit Antil and Praveen Kumar. PM Modi praised the resilience and determination of para athletes, stating that their remarkable performances have redefined the spirit of sports. He encouraged everyone to witness the emotions and triumphs of the athletes during the championship.
