Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmersโ€™ Welfare, and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, inaugurated the new administrative and academic buildings of the College of Horticulture in Bermiok, Sikkim, through a virtual ceremony. The event, which also featured the Annual Regional Workshop, was attended by several dignitaries, including Sikkim’s Governor Shri Om Prakash Mathur and Union Minister of State for Agriculture Shri Bhagirath Choudhary. The new facilities, constructed at a cost of โ‚น52 crore, aim to enhance educational opportunities for the youth in the region.

Investment in Education and Infrastructure

During the inauguration, Union Minister Chouhan emphasized the significance of the newly built structures, which are expected to provide improved educational facilities for students in Sikkim. He expressed his commitment to the region, stating that although he could not be physically present, his spirit was with the attendees. The investment of โ‚น52 crore reflects the government’s dedication to advancing agricultural education and supporting local youth in their pursuit of knowledge in horticulture.

Chouhan highlighted Sikkim’s unique geographical advantages, noting its rich natural beauty and favorable climate for cultivating various crops. He mentioned the potential for growing avocados, kiwis, large cardamom, and a variety of vegetables, including ginger and tomatoes. This investment in education is seen as a crucial step toward harnessing the state’s agricultural potential and fostering a new generation of skilled professionals in the field.

Diversity in Horticulture Practices

The Union Minister also spoke about the diversification of horticultural activities in Sikkim, which now includes non-traditional farming practices such as beekeeping and mushroom cultivation. He praised Sikkim as an organic state, where farmers avoid chemical fertilizers and produce pure, organic products for both local and national markets. Chouhan expressed his respect for the farmers of Sikkim, acknowledging their commitment to sustainable farming practices.

He noted that the promotion of organic farming is essential not only for the health of the environment but also for the economic well-being of farmers. The government aims to support these initiatives, ensuring that Sikkim’s agricultural practices continue to thrive and evolve in a sustainable manner.

Government Support for Agriculture

Chouhan reiterated the Indian government’s commitment to enhancing agricultural practices in Sikkim, particularly under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He assured that the government would prioritize the needs of hill states like Sikkim and work diligently to promote agriculture in the region. The Union Minister outlined a six-point formula proposed by the Prime Minister, which includes increasing production, reducing cultivation costs, and ensuring fair prices for farmers.

He emphasized the importance of shifting towards organic and natural farming methods, warning against the excessive use of chemical fertilizers, which can lead to adverse health effects and environmental degradation. Chouhan urged farmers and agricultural students to embrace sustainable practices to protect the land for future generations.

Encouragement for Future Agricultural Leaders

In his address to the students of agriculture, Chouhan encouraged them to stay engaged with agricultural activities after completing their education. He highlighted the vast opportunities within the agricultural sector, urging graduates to consider farming, start agri-based businesses, or introduce innovative technologies to enhance agricultural productivity.

Chouhan underscored the vital role of agriculture in India’s economy, noting that nearly 46% of the population is employed in this sector. He called for a collective effort to advance agriculture, ensuring it remains a cornerstone of the nation’s development. The event concluded with the participation of ICAR Director General Dr. Mangi Lal Jat, who joined virtually from New Delhi, further emphasizing the importance of collaboration in agricultural education and innovation.
