Government Approves Release of 2.5 Million Additional LPG Connections Under Ujjwala

In a significant move towards enhancing women’s empowerment, the Indian government has announced the release of 2.5 million additional LPG connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) for the financial year 2025-26. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his best wishes to women beneficiaries, emphasizing that this initiative not only brings joy during the Navratri festival but also reinforces the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment. Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, highlighted that this decision reflects the respect accorded to women, akin to that of Goddess Durga, and marks a vital step in uplifting the dignity of mothers and sisters across the nation.
Expansion of LPG Connections
The recent decision to provide 2.5 million deposit-free LPG connections will increase the total number of PMUY connections to 105.8 million. The government has allocated โน676 crore for this initiative, which includes โน512.5 crore specifically for the new connections at a cost of โน2,050 each. Additionally, โน160 crore is earmarked for a targeted subsidy of โน300 per 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder, applicable for up to nine refills per year. The remaining funds will cover project management expenses, transaction costs, and communication activities. This expansion aims to further enhance the accessibility of clean cooking fuel to underprivileged households.
Benefits of the Ujjwala Scheme
Under the PMUY, beneficiaries receive a deposit-free LPG connection that includes the security deposit for the cylinder, pressure regulator, and installation charges. The scheme also provides the first refill and stove at no cost, ensuring that beneficiaries do not incur any expenses for these essential items. The government and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) cover all associated costs. Beneficiaries can choose from various connection options, including a 14.2 kg single bottle, a 5 kg single bottle, or a 5 kg double bottle connection, catering to diverse household needs.
Streamlined Application Process
To facilitate access to LPG connections, the application process under PMUY has been made fully streamlined and technology-enabled. Eligible adult women from low-income households without an existing LPG connection can apply by submitting a simplified KYC application form and a Deprivation Declaration. Applications can be submitted online or at any public sector OMC distributor. The process includes system-driven checks for duplicate applications, followed by physical verification by OMC officials. Successful applicants receive a Subscription Voucher, leading to the installation of the LPG connection at their homes. Existing applicants with pending applications must complete a revised eKYC process to ensure compliance with updated requirements.
Background of the PMUY Initiative
Launched in May 2016, the PMUY aimed to provide 80 million deposit-free LPG connections, a target that was achieved by September 2019. To further assist remaining poor households, Ujjwala 2.0 was introduced in August 2021, aiming for an additional 10 million connections, which was accomplished by January 2022. The government subsequently approved 6 million additional connections under Ujjwala 2.0, achieved by December 2022, followed by another 7.5 million connections by July 2024. As of July 2025, over 103.3 million PMUY connections have been distributed, establishing it as one of the largest clean energy initiatives globally. For more information, beneficiaries can visit the official PMUY portal or contact their nearest LPG distributor.
